The Coppermine River in western Nunavut is one of Canada's great Arctic rivers, yet its vascular plant flora is poorly known. Here, we report the results of a floristic inventory of the lower Coppermine River valley and vicinity, including Kugluk (Bloody Falls) Territorial Park and the hamlet of Kugluktuk. The study area is approximately 1,200 km2, extending from the forest-tundra south of the ...

We investigate the species discriminatory power of a subset of the proposed plant barcoding loci (matK, rbcL, rpoC1, rpoB, trnH-psbA) in Carex, a cosmopolitan genus that represents one of the three largest plant genera on earth (c. 2000 species). To assess the ability of barcoding loci to resolve Carex species, we focused our sampling on three of the taxonomically best-known groups in the genus...

We investigated the regional patterns of karyotype (chromosome) variation and population genetic structure in 22 Chicago region populations of Carex scoparia, a sedge species that exhibits remarkable chromosomal variation. Karyotype rearrangements are common, with our counts in the species ranging from 2n = 62 to 2n = 68 and multiple counts fixed within at least some populations. As would be ex...

High latitude wetlands play an important role for the surface-atmosphere exchange of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4), but fluxes of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOC) in these ecosystems have to date not been extensively studied. This is despite BVOC representing a measurable proportion of the total gaseous C fluxes at northern locations and in the face of the high temperature se...

BACKGROUND Peatland restoration can have several objectives, for example re-establishing the natural habitat, supporting unique biodiversity attributes or re-initiating key biogeochemical processes, which can ultimately lead to a reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Every restoration measure, however, is itself a disturbance to the ecosystem. METHODS Here, we examine an ecosystem shif...

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are expected to be one of the key drivers determining the diversity of natural plant communities, especially in nutrient-poor and dry habitats. Several previous studies have explored the importance of AMF for the composition of plant communities in various types of habitats. Surprisingly, studies of the role of AMF in nutrient-poor dry grassland communities do...

The effect of anoxia on the energy economy of root cells was studied by measuring heat production, ethanol and ATP production, K(+) fluxes and electrical activity in two Vitis species, V. riparia and V. rupestris, that differ in their tolerance to anoxia. Anoxia triggered a marked decrease of metabolic activity (measured by microcalorimetry) and of ATP levels in both species. In V. riparia afte...
