We explain how semantic interoperability is important for the Norwegian public sector. Important aspects for a technical solution are discussed. We choose UML to help us with our semantic interoperability efforts. Some of UML’s strong point and week point are considered. Our resulting TOR system is also described.

Interoperability among difierent development tools is not a straightforward task since ontology editors rely on specific internal knowledge models which are translated into common formats such as RDF(S). This paper addresses the urgent need for interoperability by providing an exhaustive set of benchmark suites for evaluating RDF(S) import, export and interoperability. It also demonstrates, in ...

With the development of platforms enabling the use of routinely collected clinical data in the context of international clinical research, scalable solutions for cross border semantic interoperability need to be developed. Within the context of the IMI EHR4CR project, we first defined the requirements and evaluation criteria of the EHR4CR semantic interoperability platform and then developed th...

A major barrier to repurposing routinely collected data for clinical research is the heterogeneity of healthcare information systems. Electronic Health Record for Clinical Research (EHR4CR) is a European project designed to improve the efficiency of conducting clinical trials. We propose an initial architecture of the EHR4CR Semantic Interoperability Framework using Semantic Web technologies. W...

Instead of the data or information-based interoperability occurring nowadays, many application domains will profit from and strongly require knowledge-based interoperability. In Virtual Enterprises (VE) domain, for example, knowledge-based interoperability is of major importance due to the limitations of data integration supporting the dynamic and ill-specified interconnection of entities. In f...

Semantic Web supports a fire-new infrastructure for solving the problem of semantic information interoperability, and it promises to support an intelligent and automatic information-processing platform for multi-agent system whose ultimate objective is to provide better services for end-users, for example, interoperable information query. Therefore, except agent-to-agent interaction in multi-ag...

Proper functioning of smart spaces demands semantic interoperability of the knowledge processors connected to it. As a consequence it is required to develop models that would enable knowledge processors to perform onthe-fly translation and interpretation between the internal and smart spaces ontologies. The paper presents our solution to the above stated problem, which has been implemented for ...

The problem of semantic heterogeneity has gained ever increasing attention as the world’s digital information systems become more closely interconnected. Among the various interoperability problems faced by information integration solutions, the semantic interoperability problem has been growing in importance, with increasingly sophisticated approaches being proposed for its resolution. This ar...

The interoperability of Clinical Decision Support (CDS) systems is an important obstacle for their adoption. The lack of appropriate mechanisms to specify the semantics of their interfaces is a common barrier in their implementation. In this systematic review we aim to provide a clear insight into current approaches for the integration and semantic interoperability of CDS systems. Published con...

In this paper, we present and discuss data interoperability issues that limit the utilization of GIS Technology in Uganda and other similar developing countries. Using the European interoperability framework principles, organizational, semantic and technical interoperability issues pertaining to Uganda are discussed based on data collected from six major producers of spatial data. Organizationa...
