In this paper we propose a new method for shape analysis based on the depth-ordering of shapes. We use this depth-ordering to non-parametrically define depth with respect to a normal control population. This allows us to quantify differences with respect to "normality". We combine this approach with a permutation test allowing it to test for localized shape differences. The method is evaluated ...

Segmentation is a basic operation in pattern recognition. Without a previous separation of objects in an image, shape analysis of imagery pattern cannot be carried out easily. In this paper, we will present an algorithm allowing the segmentation of contour maps into closed curves. The basic idea consists of first establishing the neighbourhood relationship of contour chains and then of finding ...

High-resolution satellite imagery provides an important new data source for building extraction. We demonstrate an integrated strategy for identifying buildings in 1-meter resolution satellite imagery of urban areas. Buildings are extracted using structural, contextual, and spectral information. First, a series of geodesic opening and closing operations are used to build a differential morpholo...

A number of studies have documented that autism has a neurobiological basis, but the anatomical extent of these neurobiological abnormalities is largely unknown. In this paper, we applied advanced computational techniques to extract 3D surface models of the thalamus and subsequently analyze highly localized shape variations in a homogeneous group of autism children. In particular, a new conform...

This paper features an efficient method of performing the shape analysis of objects in a binary image using a technique called as the moments. Using these moments, we can compute the centroid, moment of inertia, principal angle, orientation of the captured objects in the image. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the developed method. Index Terms — Moments, Invariance, Centroid, Mo...

There are many connected characters in cursive Uyghur handwriting, which makes the segmentation and recognition of Uyghur words very difficult. To enable large vocabulary Uyghur word recognition using character models, we propose a character separation method for over-segmentation in online cursive Uyghur handwriting. After removing delayed strokes from the handwritten words, potential breakpoi...

Most of the efforts concerning graphical representations of humans (Virtual Humans) have been focused on synthesizing geometry for static or animated shapes. The next step is to consider a human body not only as a 3D shape, but as an active semantic entity with features, functionalities, interaction skills, etc. In the framework of the AIM@SHAPE Network of Excellence we are currently working on...

Conventional methods for shape analysis, based upon Procrustes and PCA, seem incapable of dealing with ‘non-landmark’ features, meaning measured locations not associated with well defined locations. We argue here that this is due to an assumption of homogenous errors, associated with an attempt to extract linear models with biologically meaningful descriptions. This document contains the mathem...

In this chapter we study reparametrization invariant Sobolev metrics on spaces of regular curves. We discuss their completeness properties and the resulting usability for applications in shape analysis. In particular, we will argue, that the development of efficient numerical methods for higher order Sobolev type metrics is an extremely desirable goal.

This study focuses on a feature extraction algorithm for classification of marble tiles. The color content and vein distribution are considered to be the main criteria for classification. A color segmentation algorithm is used for detection of veins. The shape analysis of the veins are done by utilizing the distance image.
