Strains of HSV-1 have been noted to vary in their pathogenesis. We compared the replication of strains KOS and McKrae in mice by two routes of infection, ocular and vaginal. Peripheral replication of KOS was similar (cornea) or attenuated over time (vagina) compared with McKrae; however, McKrae replicated in the nervous system to significantly higher levels than KOS after inoculation by either ...

Infection of Wi-38 cells with herpes simplex virus induced an elevated DNA polymerase activity which had many biochemical properties different from normal cell DNA polymerase. Phosphonoacetic acid specifically inhibited the virus-induced DNA polymerase as compared to the normal WI-38 cell DNA polymerase. The compound did not appear to inhibit enzyme activity by interacting with the DNA primer.

The fate of herpes simplex virus (HSV) in the lymphocytes of patients with juvenile chronic arthritis (JCA) was studied by previously described methods. Lymphocytes isolated from blood and joint effusions of 18 patients with systemic JCA and 11 patients with pauciarticular JCA usually supported viral growth normally.

The growth of herpes simplex virus (HSV) was measured in blood lymphocytes isolated from patients with connective tissue diseases receiving immunosuppressive drugs. Whereas lymphocytes from such patients were frequently nonpermissive for HSV before treatment, they became permissive in most patients after treatment. The exception was the persistence of nonpermissiveness in lymphocytes of treated...

The meroditerpenoids atomaric acid (1), epitaondiol (2) and the peroxylactone of 5'a-desmethyl-5'-acetylatomaric acid (3) were isolated from the Brazilian brown alga Stypopodium zonale collected in two localities (Búzios and Marataízes, RJ and ES States). These compounds showed strong anti-HSV-1 activity in vitro but neither of them inhibited the transcriptase reverse enzyme of HIV-1.

These guidelines concern the management of anogenital herpes simplex virus infections in adults and give advice on diagnosis, management, and counselling of patients. This guideline replaces the 2007 BASHH herpes guidelines and includes new sections on herpes proctitis, key points to cover with patients regarding transmission and removal of advice on the management of HSV in pregnancy which now...

A series of schizonepetin derivatives have been designed and synthesized in order to obtain potent antivirus agents. The antiviral activity against HSV-1 and influenza virus H3N2 as well as the cytotoxicity of these derivatives was evaluated by using cytopathic effect (CPE) inhibition assay in vitro. Compounds M2, M4, M5 and M34 showed higher inhibitory activity against HSV-1 virus with the TC5...
