The movements of the faces and bodies of other conspecifics provide stimuli of considerable interest to the social primate. Studies of single cells, field potential recordings and functional neuroimaging data indicate that specialized visual mechanisms exist in the superior temporal sulcus (STS) of both human and non-human primates that produce selective neural responses to moving natural image...

One of the moet promising areas in Knowledge Discovery in Databases is the automatic analysis of changes and deviations. Several systems have recently been developed for this task. Suc~ of these systems hinges on their ability to identify s few important and relevant deviations among the multitude of potentially interesting events:~ In this paper we argue that related deviations should be group...

A basic statistic that students learn about in their classes is the standard deviation. Like any statistic, standard deviations are influenced by systematic factors and randomness. I propose that researchers should report “corrected” or “true” standard deviations and I show how to calculate them. The notion of “true” statistics comes out of classical test theory (see Lord and Novick, 1968; Gull...

We prove that the Moderate Deviation Principle (MDP) holds for the trajectory of a locally square integrable martingale with bounded jumps as soon as its quadratic covariation, properly scaled, converges in probability at an exponential rate. A consequence of this MDP is the tightness of the method of bounded martingale diierences in the regime of moderate deviations.

Deleterious or 'disease-associated' mutations are mutations that lead to disease with high phenotype penetrance: they are inherited in a simple Mendelian manner, or, in the case of cancer, accumulate in somatic cells leading directly to disease. However, in some cases, the amino acid that is substituted resulting in disease is the wild-type native residue in the functionally equivalent protein ...

| Process Support Systems (PSSs) support business organizations in modeling, improving, and automating their business process. Thanks to their ability in enacting process models, they can be used to guide people in performing their daily work and to automate the repetitive tasks that do not require human intervention. Given these potential beneets, it is surprising to observe that PSSs are not ...

This paper considers Gaussian flows multiplexed in a queueing network. A single node being a useful but often incomplete setting, we examine more advanced models. We focus on a (twonode) tandem queue, fed by a large number of Gaussian inputs. With service rates and buffer sizes at both nodes scaled appropriately, Schilder’s sample-path large deviations theorem can be applied to calculate the as...
