This paper presents a novel communication model to simulate various crowd behaviors such as riot. Our communication model is heavily based on the results from sociology research. Collective behaviors can emerge out of social processes such as emotion contagion and conformity effect among individual agents. The communication model has been implemented in our crowd simulation system, IMCrowd, in ...

The purpose of this White Paper of the EU Support Action “Visioneer”[1] is to address the following goals: 1. Develop strategies to build up social simulation capacities. 2. Suggest ways to build up an “artificial societies” community that aims at simulating real and alternative societies by means of supercomputers, grid or cloud computing. 3. Derive proposals to establish centers for integrati...

A description of the area of Agent Based Social Simulation (ABSS) from a computer scientist's perspective is presented. We begin by defining ABSS by positioning it with respect to the three research areas that it is related to, i.e., agent-based computing, the social sciences, and computer simulation. We then discuss the role of ABSS and how it may aid cross-fertilisation between these areas.

Emergency evacuation (egress) design and planning are important aspects in building and facility engineering. Studies of past emergency events indicate that evacuating occupants often exhibit social behaviors during the evacuation process. Such behaviors are often shaped by pre-existing social relationships and influenced by perceived information. This paper describes an on-going research effor...

We propose the use of social simulations to study and support the design of online communities. In this paper, we developed an Agent-Based Model (ABM) to simulate and study the formation of social networks in a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) guild community. We first analyzed the activities and the social network (who-interacts-with-whom) of an existing guild community ...

The effect of social network structure on team performance is difficult to investigate using standard field observational studies. This is because social network structure is an endogeneous variable, in that prior team performance can influence the values of structural measures such as centrality and connectedness. In this work we propose a novel simulation model based on agent-based modeling t...

In the two studies reported here, we examined the relation among residential mobility, economic conditions, and optimal social-networking strategy. In study 1, a computer simulation showed that regardless of economic conditions, having a broad social network with weak friendship ties is advantageous when friends are likely to move away. By contrast, having a small social network with deep frien...

We study in this thesis the problem of social attitude formation and dynamics using multi agent simulation. The concept of attitude could be defined as a global evaluation of a social object, based on cognitive or affective information. Our works belongs to the field of social simulation which aims to reproduce in a virtual environment complex social phenomenon at a macroscopic level based on m...

We show how agents with argumentative reasoning abilities can be effectively used to run social simulation experiments with NetArg [4]. NetArg agents interact by exchanging arguments in support or against other arguments or opinions, and adapt to new knowledge. By running simulation experiments, we can replicate a robust result in social simulation, namely that small-world network topologies ar...

The growing importance of links between the social and technical dimensions of the electricity infrastructure mean that many research problems cannot be effectively addressed without joint consideration of social and technical dynamics. This paper motivates the need for and introduces a tool to facilitate the development of linked social and technical models of electric power systems. The tool,...
