BACKGROUND We observed previously that newborn infants are colonized with Staphylococcus aureus, even if their mothers do not carry S aureus. This observation indicated a cross colonization, and, thus, a risk for nosocomial infection, although the infants are roomed in with their mothers. METHODS The S aureus colonization of infants, their parents, and staff members was measured at 3 maternit...

BACKGROUND Our aim was to determine and characterize S. aureus (SA) isolated from infections in newborns for antibiotic resistance, virulence factors, genotypes, epidemiology and antibiotic consumption. METHODS Prospective surveillance of infections was conducted. Data about antibiotic treatment were analyzed. Antimicrobial susceptibility was assessed. PCR amplification was used to detect res...

Today, next-generation whole-genome sequencing (WGS) is increasingly used to determine the genetic relationships of bacteria on a nearly whole-genome level for infection control purposes and molecular surveillance. Here, we conducted a multicenter ring trial comprising five laboratories to determine the reproducibility and accuracy of WGS-based typing. The participating laboratories sequenced 2...

Staphylococcus aureus is the leading etiologic agent of orthopedic implant infections. Here a ribocluster of 27 S. aureus strains underwent further molecular characterization and subtyping by multilocus sequence typing (MLST) and spa-typing. This cluster had been detected by automated ribotyping (with the EcoRI restriction enzyme) of 200 S. aureus isolates from periprosthetic infections of pati...

In genetic analysis of bovine Staphylococcus aureus isolates that are recognized as an important pathogenic bacterium in bovine mastitis, multilocus sequence typing (MLST) showed strong correlation to the results of pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, coa PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP), spa typing, and the coagulase serotyping method. According to MLST results, strains derive...

BACKGROUND  Strategies to prevent Staphylococcus aureus infection in hospitals focus on patient-to-patient transmission. We used whole-genome sequencing to investigate the role of colonized patients as the source of new S. aureus acquisitions, and the reliability of identifying patient-to-patient transmission using the conventional approach of spa typing and overlapping patient stay. METHODS ...

With a high capacity to acquire antimicrobial resistance, Staphylococcus aureus is an important pathogen causing severe infections in animals and humans. A total of 50 isolates from retail ground beef, chicken meat, fish were characterized by resistance profiling, staphylococcal protein gene (spa) typing, multilocus sequence typing (MLST). The broth microdilution test results showed that all re...

We present the draft genome sequence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strain CBD-635, from the USA100 lineage. This is a sepsis isolate obtained from Tampa General Hospital. This strain is spa type t003 and multilocus sequence typing (MLST) type ST5, and it has been used by our group in the study of novel antimicrobial chemotherapeutics.

Seronegative spondyloarthritis (SpA) are variably associated with HLA-B∗27 antigen. HLA-B∗27 negative SpA has also been reported from different parts of the world. There is paucity of data on this entity from Indian subcontinent. We studied 100 consecutively diagnosed HLA-B27 negative spondyloarthritis patients from a tertiary care center in India. Modified New York Criteria for ankylosing spon...

This study aimed to investigate the prevalence, molecular characteristics and antibiotic resistance of Staphylococcus aureus isolates from yak butter in Tibet, China. A total 218 samples were collected retail stores Tibet screened for Staph. aureus. Furthermore, virulence genes, antimicrobial susceptibility, typing [pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), multilocus sequence typing, staphyloco...
