MCKINDSEY, C.W., and MCLAUGHLIN, J.D. 1994. Transmission of Cyclocoelum mutabile (Digenea) to snails: the influence of temperature on the egg and miracidium. Can. J. Zool. 72: 1745 175 1. This study examined the survival and hatching dynamics of eggs of the digenean Cyclocoelum mutabile and the survivorship and infectivity of the miracidia under different temperature regimes. Hatching did not o...

The size of the web built by Araneus diadematus is influenced by several factors. The single most important factor is of course the size of the spider, but other factors also play a role. One of these factors is the supply of silk in the glands of the spider. In this study, the influence of the supply of silk (deduced from the time since the spider had built its previous web) on the size of the...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Attention Bias Modification (ABM) targets attention bias (AB) towards threat and is a potential therapeutic intervention for anxiety. The current study investigated whether initial AB (towards or away from spider images) influenced the effectiveness of ABM in spider fear. METHODS AB was assessed with an attentional probe task consisting of spider and neutral images p...

Final Report: Ultra-high Thermal Conductivity of Spider Silk: Protein Function Study with Controlled Structure Change and Comparison Report Title In the past three years, we have conducted extensive research to study the structure of spider silks and investigate how the structure affects the silk’s thermal transport. The comparison of thermal conductivity (k) and structural information between ...

skeletal abnormalities are most often used to describe defects in the arms or legs that are associated with genes or chromosomes, or that occur due to an event that happens during pregnancy. spider lamb syndrome (sls) is a congenital disorder in sheep breeding that is recognized by some deformities in skeletal system especially in the limbs.a dead day-old cross-breed white lamb with deformed li...

The effectiveness of 3 methods for sampling spiders in grape vineyards was tested. The sampling methods were as follows: (1) a drop-cloth method in which spiders were dislodged from a 5.1-m2 area of grapevine onto a drop cloth, (2) a funnel method in which spiders were dislodged into a 0.74-m2 funnel, and (3) a D-vac method in which 50 sections of grapevine (3D-em sections, total area of 5.4 m2...

Prostaglandins participate in a variety of female reproductive processes, including ovulation, fertilization, embryo implantation and parturition. In particular, maternal prostacyclin (PGI(2)) is critical for embryo implantation and the action of PGI(2) is not mediated via its G-protein-coupled membrane receptor, IP, but its nuclear receptor, peroxisome-proliferator-activated receptor δ (PPARδ)...

I examined the role of vibrations in predator-induced early hatching of red-eyed treefrogs, Agalychnis callidryas. The arboreal eggs of A. callidryas hatch up to 30% early if attacked by egg-eating snakes. This induced hatching is a behavioural response that occurs once snakes begin physically disturbing the clutch, and is sufficiently rapid to allow most embryos to escape. Other intense but be...

Vision is the key sensory system in humans, leading to the implicit assumption that the acquisition of spider phobia is predominantly mediated through the visual pathway. We report on a congenitally blind person with spider phobia, showing that the acquisition of spider phobia does not necessarily depend on visual cues.

The design of a Web spider entails many things, including a concern for reasonable behavior, as well as more technical concerns. The RBSE Spider is a mechanism for exploring World Wide Web structure and indexing useful material thereby discovered. We relate our experience in constructing and operating this spider.
