Abstract The splash created by intense laser pulse impact onto a liquid tin layer is studied experimentally using time-delayed stroboscopic shadowgraphy. An 8-ns infrared (1064 nm) focused deep pool. Various spot sizes (70, 120, and 130 $$\upmu$$ ? m in diameter) various energies (ranging 2.5–30 mJ) are used,...

We explore the evolution of a splash when a liquid drop impacts a smooth dry surface. There are two splashing regimes that occur when the liquid viscosity is varied as is evidenced by its dependence on ambient gas pressure. A high-viscosity drop splashes by emitting a thin sheet of liquid from a spreading liquid lamella long after the drop has first contacted the solid. Likewise, we find that t...

Disk evolution and chondrules: Historically it has often been tacitly supposed (e.g. [1]) that the protoplanetary disk evolved through four sequential stages: (1) production of CAIs and chondrules by the rapid (flash) melting of clumps of dust; (2) accretion of primitive planetesimals; (3) metamorphism and melting of those planetesimals; (4) collisional break-up of planetesimals and their aggre...

SUMMARY Physically based simulation of 10 meter platform dives from the initial stance of a human diver to the splash at water entry. A dynamic model and control system are used to generate the motion of the diver. The dynamics of incompressible fluids and particle systems are combined to produce the splash.
