Silver-containing phosphate-based glasses were found to reduce the growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus biofilms, which are leading causes of nosocomial infections. The rates of glass degradation (1.27 to 1.41 microg.mm(-2).h(-1)) and the corresponding silver release were found to account for the variation in biofilm growth inhibitory effect.
Staphylococcus aureus RN6390 presents a diauxic growth in milk, due to amino acid limitation. Inactivation of the oligopeptide permease Opp3 (dedicated to the nitrogen nutrition of the strain) not only affects the growth of the strain but also results in reduced expression levels of three major extracellular proteases.
Staphylococcus aureus is a major cause of mastitis in dairy cattle. This study estimated the herd prevalence of methicillin-resistant Staph. aureus (MRSA) among US dairy herds by testing bulk tank milk (BTM) samples using genotypic and phenotypic methods. A nationally representative sample of 542 operations had BTM cultured for Staph. aureus, and 218 BTM samples were positive upon initial cultu...
This article reports the development of a novel fluorometric indicator which shows a rapid response when exposed to coagulase positive Staphylococcus aureus (SA) bacteria (including methicillin sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) and methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteria). The test is robust and will detect a wide variety of SA strains and there is no significant fluore...
A 5-h broth disk test, read visually for growth or no growth to determine resistance of coagulase-negative staphylococci to 1.6 micrograms of novobiocin per ml, was evaluated as a rapid test for the presumptive identification of Staphylococcus saprophyticus. The correlation with an overnight disk diffusion test was 100%.
Growth as a biofilm facilitates the emergence of antibiotic resistance by mutation in Staphylococcus aureus. Here we demonstrate that biofilm growth of this species also dramatically increases horizontal transfer of plasmid-borne antibiotic resistance determinants by conjugation/mobilization and that standard laboratory practices to induce conjugation in staphylococci achieve optimal efficiency...
Gellan xanthan gels have been shown to be excellent carriers for growth factors and as matrices for several tissue engineering applications. Gellan xanthan gels along with chitosan nanoparticles of 297 ± 61 nm diameter, basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), and bone morphogenetic protein 7 (BMP7) were employed in a dual growth factor delivery system to promote the differentiation of human feta...
A kit for the identification of staphylococci based on the biochemical criteria proposed by Kloos and Schleifer (W.E. Kloos and K.H. Schleifer, J. Clin. Microbiol., 1:82-88, 1975) is now available commercially. The system was used to identify 100 strains of coagulase-negative staphylococci isolated from various body sites as the primary etiological agent of clinical infection. The increasing im...
Background:The utility and efficacy of novel materials in tissue regeneration and antimicrobial therapy are contingent upon the employment of either blood derivatives rich in platelets or platelet-poor-plasma (PPP). This effect is largely mediated by the increased or decreased concentration of platelets in the plasma. The current study aimed t...
This pilot study investigated the pathogens that nurses are potentially bringing into the public and their home when they wear work uniforms outside of the work environment. To achieve this, sterilized uniforms were distributed to 10 nurses at a local hospital in Washington State at the beginning of their shift. Worn uniforms were collected at the end of the shifts and sent to a laboratory for ...
