Motivated by the challenge of designing a real-time conversational agent that is always on and builds long-term relationships, we have developed a software architecture that operates with control loops at three distinct time scales, from weeks down to milliseconds. We discuss the novel aspects of this architecture and how it is applied in a relational agent for isolated older adults.
