In this article the complexity of the construct engagement and three theories on this topic are discussed. Csikszentmihalyi's theory of flow is taken as starting point for the measurement of engagement. The measurement of each of its eight aspects is discussed, including its pros and cons. Regrettably, no overarching computational model is available. This article ends with a concise discussion.

Good holograms are bewitching. They command our eyes to their images, to search the marvelous realness of surfaces, textures, and minute detail for some aberration, some visual clue that will dissuade us from seeing as real what we know is not. Yet while they seem to assemble the very molecules of physical matter for us to ponder, they also present a conundrum: The objects they render appear fr...

Background and objective: Flood damages and losses include a wide range of environmental, social and economic damages; therefore, all dimensions of flood damages need to be considered in the process of flood risk planning and management. The present research was conducted with the aim of introducing the integrated assessment framework in relation to damages incurred by flood considering four co...

Tangible interfaces allow physical control and representation of digital information. When designing such interfaces one needs to take into consideration the potential conflicts between the hardware of the artifact and the form of the user control. The design problem is a search for an appropriate fitness (or effortless coexistence) between these two aspects. This problem makes tangible interfa...

3D puzzles provide valuable opportunities for both individuals and groups of people to explore, learn, and create in a natural way. In educational settings, learners using these tools can benefit from occasional intervention by a knowledgeable “guide on the side”. In our project, Tangible Interfaces for Collaborative Learning Environments (TICLE), we are exploring innovative ways of enabling a ...

This paper presents a new circular tangible interface where one or multiple users can collaborate and interact in real time by placing and moving passive wooden pucks on a transparent tabletop in order to create music. The design encourages physical intuition and visual feedback on the music being created. An arm with six optical sensors rotates beneath a transparent surface, triggering sounds ...

Tangible augmented reality interfaces offer a hands on approach for examining objects and exploring the associated information. We describe two tangible augmented reality interfaces that can expose the adaptation of information presented to users about objects in augmented reality environments.
