The cause of diphyllobothriosis in 5 persons in Harbin and Shanghai, China, during 2008-2011, initially attributed to the tapeworm Diphyllobothrium latum, was confirmed as D. nihonkaiense by using molecular analysis of expelled proglottids. The use of morphologic characteristics alone to identify this organism was inadequate and led to misidentification of the species.

We report a 25-year-old woman who presented with abdominal pain, vomiting and fever, and had an epigastric lump on examination. At laparotomy she was diagnosed to have acute segmental jejunitis. Three days postoperative, she vomited a 2-meter-long tapeworm (Taenia saginata), a rare route of expulsion.

Taenia martis is a tapeworm affecting mustelids, with rodents serving as intermediate hosts. The larval stage (cysticercus) has been found before only rarely in humans or primates. We hereby describe a case of cerebral T. martis cysticercosis in a French immunocompetent patient, confirmed by DNA analyses of biopsy material.

Alveolar echinococcosis of the liver can be mistaken as a liver tumor. The occurrence of the fox tapeworm echinococcus multilocularis is increasing in formerly unaffected European regions. As a consequence, alveolar echinococcosis is becoming an important differential diagnosis in Eastern and Northern Europe.

Human cysticercosis caused by Taenia crassiceps tapeworm larvae involves the muscles and subcutis mostly in immunocompromised patients and the eye in immunocompetent persons. We report a successfully treated cerebellar infection in an immunocompetent woman. We developed serologic tests, and the parasite was identified by histologic examination and 12s rDNA PCR and sequencing.
