Methods We present a 14y old girl with polyostotic fibrous dysplasia (right humerus, femur, tibia, skull), precocious puberty and café au lait skin spots, diagnosed as MAS with a confirmed heterozygous c.601C>T mutation of the GNAS1 gene. Due to initial bone pain and continuously increasing bone turnover, the patient was treated with iv bisphosphonates for 4 years. We used pQCT to estimate bone...

Weightless environment due to prolonged Space mission results in decreased mineralisation of the weight bearing bones. Hind limb unweighting (HU) in rats by tail suspension was used to simulate the effect of weightlessness on tibia. Adult male albino rats were divided into two groups as (i) Control (CON, n = 12) and (ii) HU for 15 days (HU, n = 18). After 15 days of HU tibia from all the animal...

BACKGROUND Upper tibia defects ,type3b Gustilo, due to huge size and volume are very difficult to reconstruct; usually several operations are needed for bone and soft tissue defects and the definite one stage reconstruction is yet to be found. OBJECTIVES In this article we reintroduce the rib- latissimus flap as an acceptable method to reconstruct tibia defects in selected cases. MATERIALS ...

Skeletal integrity in meat-type chickens is affected by many factors including rapid growth rate, nutrition and genetics. To investigate the genetic basis of bone and mineral metabolism, a QTL detection study was conducted in an intercross between two lines of meat-type chickens divergently selected for their high (D +) or low (D -) digestive efficiency. Tibia size (length, diameter, volume) an...

Mechanical and kinematical aligning techniques are the usual positioning methods during total knee arthroplasty. However, alteration of the physiological joint line and unbalanced medio-lateral load distribution are considered disadvantages in the mechanical and kinematical techniques, respectively. The aim of this study was to analyse the influence of the joint line on the strain and stress di...

This study discusses the results of a histological examination of bone calluses in the treatment of tibia fractures in sheep with the involvement of a semi-circular fixator. In all sheep, callus samples revealed the presence of well-developed, compact bone tissue in the area of fracture healing. It was found that the use of a semi-circular fixator promoted bone growth, and that it is an effecti...

We present an elderly patient with a squamous cell carcinoma over the subcutaneous aspect of the leg involving the tibia. En bloc resection of the tumour together with a 10 centimetre segment of the tibia was done. The resected bone was autoclaved, replaced in its original position and stabilized with bone cement and a locked nail. This allowed early ambulation with minimal cost.

BACKGROUND/AIMS In a randomized controlled clinical trial in kidney transplant recipients (NCT01377467) we have recently shown that RANKL inhibition with denosumab significantly improved areal bone mineral density (aBMD) when given during the first year after transplantation. The effect of denosumab on skeletal microstructure and bone strength in kidney transplant recipients is not known. MET...

BACKGROUND Reproducible and suitable animal models are required for in vivo experiments to investigate new biodegradable and osteoinductive biomaterials for augmentation of bones at risk for osteoporotic fractures. Sheep have especially been used as a model for the human spine due to their size and similar bone metabolism. However, although sheep and human vertebral bodies have similar biomecha...

Ankle arthrodesis is commonly used in the treatment of ankle arthritis. The present study compared mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) bone allografts and proximal tibia autografts as adjuncts in performing ankle arthrodesis. A total of 109 consecutive ankle fusions performed from 2002 to 2008 were evaluated retrospectively. Of the 109 fusions, 24 were excluded from the present study, leaving 85 patien...
