We study a certain random growth model in two dimensions closely related to the one-dimensional totally asymmetric exclusion process. The results show that the shape fluctuations, appropriately scaled, converges in distribution to the Tracy-Widom largest eigenvalue distribution for the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE).

In previous work of C. A. Tracy and the author asymptotic formulas were derived for certain operator determinants whose interest lay in the fact that quotients of them gave solutions to the cylindrical Toda equations. In the present paper we consider a more general class of operators which retain some of the properties of those cited and we find analogous asymptotics for the determinants.
We prove universality at the edge for rescaled correlation functions of Wigner random matrices in the limit n → +∞. As a corollary, we show that, after proper rescaling, the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. eigenvalues of Wigner random hermitian (or real symmetric) matrix weakly converge to the distributions established by Tracy and Widom in G.U.E. (G.O.E.) cases.
We point out a simple argument relying on hypercontractivity to describe tail inequalities on the distribution of the largest eigenvalues of random matrices at the rate given by the Tracy–Widom distribution.
