We report new measurements of the linear polarization of thermal radiation emitted by incandescent thin tungsten wires, with thicknesses ranging from five to hundred microns. Our data show very good agreement with theoretical predictions, based on Drude-type fits to measured optical properties of tungsten. Polarized thermal emission by thin metal wires 2

Ferrous metals include cast iron, steel, and the various steel alloys, The only difference between iron and steel is the carbon content. Cast iron contains more than 2-percent carbon, while steel contains less than 2 percent. An alloy is a substance composed of two or more elements. Therefore, all steels are an alloy of iron and carbon, but the term “alloy steel” normally refers to a steel that...

We predict that modified thermal emission can result from three-dimensional, self-assembled photonic crystals. In previous tungsten structures, known as inverse opals, strong absorption prevented any influence of the periodicity. We consider the origin of this effect and show how to tailor both absorption and surface coupling in experimentally realizable metallic inverse opals. Calculations for...

Tungsten hexacarbonyl (W(CO)(6)) is frequently used as an organometallic precursor to create metal-containing nanostructures in electron beam induced deposition (EBID). However, the fundamental electron stimulated reactions responsible for both tungsten deposition and the incorporation of carbon and oxygen atom impurities remain unclear. To address this issue we have studied the effect of 500 e...

Tungsten carbide exhibits platinum-like behavior, which makes it an interesting potential substitute for noble metals in catalytic applications. Tungsten carbide nanocrystals (≈5 nm) are directly synthesized through the reaction of tungsten precursors with mesoporous graphitic C(3)N(4) (mpg-C(3)N(4)) as the reactive template in a flow of inert gas at high temperatures. Systematic experiments th...

Highly anisotropic dry etching of tungsten silicide and tungsten polycides is required for the realization of submicron low resistance gates and interconnects for use in high performance complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor ~CMOS! and BiCMOS technologies. The current etch chemistries are not anisotropic, i.e., lateral etching of the tungsten silicide takes place which results in undesirable ...

Dimerisation of alpha-olefins by a catalyst system comprising of a bis(imido) tungsten compound and a Lewis acid component has been investigated by density functional theory employing a catalyst model that closely mimics the real system together with ethylene chosen as a prototypical substrate. This study disclosed that the Lewis acid preferably forms four-membered chelates by bridging across t...
