A novel microstructure based temperature sensor system using hybrid wavelength-division-multiplexing /frequency-division-multiplexing (WDM/FDM) is proposed. The sensing unit is a specially designed microstructure sensor both frequency and wavelength encoded, as well as low insertion loss which makes it have the potential to be densely multiplexed along one fiber. Moreover, the microstructure ca...

We report on the demonstration of a broadband (60 GHz), spectrally hitless, compact (20 microm x 40 microm), fast (7 ns) electro-optical switch. The device is composed of two coupled resonant cavities, each with an independently addressable PIN diode. This topology enables operation of the switch without perturbing adjacent channels in a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) system.

A single failure in a communication network can trigger many alarms. We propose an alarm ltering algorithm for the management of an optical network using Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM). The algorithm supports: (i) multiple failures and (ii) passive network elements that do not generate alarms but may fail. This algorithm will be applied to the network of the ACTS COBNET project.

Routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) is a central issue to increase efficiency and reduce cost in Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) optical networks. In this paper, we propose an improved scheme of wavelength assignment of parallel FFT communication pattern on a class of regular optical networks. With our new scheme, the numbers of wavelengths required to realize parallel FFT communicat...

Recent developments in all-optical networking and wavelength division multiplexing technologies allow for the support of optical multicasting, a missing feature towards the optical Internet. In this paper we propose a protocol to construct source-rooted WDM multicast trees. The protocol works under dense mode multicast routing IP protocols and supports network nodes with different degrees of li...

Storage Area Networks (SANs) have become an essential part of today’s enterprise computing. The paper reports the design of SANs based on metro Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) networks technologies. It reviews related SAN technologies. It also presents analysis and simulation results of a proposed architecture. Throughput, delay and packet dropping probability results are presented under...

Most existing wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) networks employ circuit switching, typically with one session having exclusive use of one entire wavelength. Consequently they are not suitable for data applications involving bursty traac patterns. The All-Optical Network (AON) Consortium has developed an all-optical LAN/MAN testbed which provides time-slotted WDM service 1]. In this paper, w...

This Letter proposes a method for tunable automatically locked homodyne detection of wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) dual-polarization (DP) phase-shift keyed (PSK) channels using nonlinear mixing. Two stages of periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguides and an LCoS filter enable automatic phase locking of the channels to a local laser.

The basic wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) routing and provisioning problem is considered in this paper. The literature is replete with prescriptive integer programming models for various versions of WDM design problems, but in no case they consider the real situation of solving them taking into account the former nature of the problem, that is, its inherent vagueness. In this paper this ...
