We consider capillary surfaces for certain rotationally invariant elliptic parametric functionals supported on two hydrophobically wetted horizontal plates separated by a fixed distance. It is shown that each such stable capillary surface is uniquely determined by the volume interior to the surface.

An experimental investigation of the local film cooling effectiveness and heat transfer coefficient downstream of a row of elongated holes in a simulated axial turbine blade tip is presented. Film cooling is needed to protect the turbine blade tip region from high heat transfer rates, especially when cooling by convection is insufficient to keep the temperature distribution of the blade within ...

Knowledge of the fluid-fluid and fluid-solid interfacial areas is important to better understand and quantify many flow and transport processes in porous media. This paper presents estimates for interfacial areas of porous media containing two or three fluids from measured capillary pressure (PC)-saturation (S) relations. The thermodynamic treatment of two-fluid PC-S relations presented by Morr...

Several physical properties of almond nut and kernel were evaluated as functions of moisture content. The average length, width, thickness, the geometric mean diameter, unit mass and volume of nuts were 25.49, 17.03, 13.12, 18.13 mm, 2.64 g and 2.61 cm respectively. Corresponding values for kernel were 21.19, 14.34, 6.38, 11.42 mm, 0.69 g and 0.71 cm respectively. In the moisture range from 2.7...

Comprehensive field studies were initiated in 2002, to measure emissions of ammonia (NH3), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHC), particulate matter less than 10 microns diameter (PM10), and total suspended particulates (TSP) from swine and poultry production buildings in the U.S. This paper focuses on the quasi-continuous gas concentration...

In recent years extensive work has been focused onto using superhydrophobic surfaces for drag reduction applications. Superhydrophobic surfaces retain a gas layer, called a plastron, when submerged underwater in the Cassie-Baxter state with water in contact with the tops of surface roughness features. In this state the plastron allows slip to occur across the surface which results in a drag red...

Comprehensive field studies were initiated in 2002 to measure emissions of ammonia (NH3), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nonmethane hydrocarbons (NMHC), particulate matter <10 microm in diameter, and total suspended particulate from swine and poultry production buildings in the United States. This paper focuses on the quasicontinuous gas concentration measurement a...

Field water balance measurements using monolithic lysimeters were used in validating the Cupid-DPE model for predicting water loss partitioning during sprinkler irrigation from a moving lateral system fitted with impact sprinklers and spray nozzles. The model combines equations governing water droplet evaporation and droplet ballistics with a comprehensive plant-environment energy balance model...
