It is now common knowledge that enzymes are mobile entities relying on complex atomic-scale dynamics and coordinated conformational events for proper ligand recognition and catalysis. However, the exact role of protein dynamics in enzyme function remains either poorly understood or difficult to interpret. This mini-review intends to reconcile biophysical observations and biological significance...

Planar functions over finite fields give rise to finite projective planes and other combinatorial objects. They were originally defined only in odd characteristic, but recently Zhou introduced a definition in even characteristic which yields similar applications. In this paper we show that certain functions over F2r are planar, which proves a conjecture of Schmidt and Zhou. The key to our proof...

Proteins can be localized either by inclusion or exclusion, and the Par polarity proteins illustrate both mechanisms. Cdc42 recruits Par-6 to a limited region of the plasma membrane. Par-6 recruits Par-3, which is actively removed from other regions by Par-1 and Par-5. Inclusion and exclusion together ensure efficient segregation of the polarity proteins.

several nonpeptide small molecules were designed as potential inhibitors of hiv protease and their structures were constructed by computer-aided molecular modeling and docked iwo the active site of hiv protease. models of the complexes of inhibitors and the hiv protease were refined using nonbonded and h-bonding terms. the refined energy of selected complexes showed that the designed inhibitors...

Objective: Investigations were carried out to isolate bacteria from saline-alkali soils and determined optimized alkaline protease activity and stability produced by a wild strain of bacillus sp. in submerged fermentation (SMF). Methods: Optimum temperature for enzyme activity in the crude extract was 40 ◦C at a pH between 8.0 and 9.0. The studies on pH stability showed that the enzyme...

Alpha-1-proteinase inhibitor (API) is one of the acute phase proteins. Following an inflammatory stimuli the concentration of API increased up to four folds. Accompanying these quantitative changes, there is qualitative alterations in the structure of carbohydrate moiety (glycosylation). To determine the alterations in the glycosylation of API in inflammation, API was isolated from the sera of...

Protease inhibitors are key components in the chemotherapy of HIV infection. However, the appearance of viral mutants routinely compromises their clinical efficacy, creating a constant need for new and more potent inhibitors. Recently, a new class of epoxide-based inhibitors of HIV-1 protease was investigated and the configuration of the epoxide carbons was demonstrated to play a crucial role i...
