A new method, embedded-3D printing (e-3DP), is reported for fabricating strain sensors within highly conformal and extensible elastomeric matrices. e-3DP allows soft sensors to be created in nearly arbitrary planar and 3D motifs in a highly programmable and seamless manner. Several embodiments are demonstrated and sensor performance is characterized.

The now classical enhanced strain technique, employed with success for more than 10 years in solid, both 2D and 3D and shell nite elements, is here explored in a versatile 3D low-order element which is identi ed as HIS. The quest for accurate results in a wide range of problems, from solid analysis including near-incompressibility to the analysis of locking-prone beam and shell bending problems...

With increasing structural and functional applications of 3D printed materials, their mechanical performance is highly demanded. So far, stressand strain-based experiments have been used to characterize the mechanical properties of fused deposition modeled (FDM) samples. In this work, a fracture-mechanics-based methodology was developed to characterize the interlayer adhesion of FDM 3D printed ...

Finite element method in pavement analysis is a type of mechanistic analysis that has widely been used by road and transportation engineers these days. This method is used with related programs such as ABAQUS/CAE which is one of the powerful software on this task. Modeling in this software has been developed from 2D static models to 3D dynamic models which are closer to reality due to the more ...

The tissues of hollow organs can routinely stretch up to 2.5 times their length. Although significant pathology can arise if relatively large stretches are sustained, the responses of cells are not known at these levels of sustained strain. A key challenge is presenting cells with a realistic and well-defined three-dimensional (3D) culture environment that can sustain such strains. Here, we des...

This paper addresses the problem of computing planar patterns for compression garments. In the garment industry, the compression garment has been more and more widely used to retain a shape of human body, where certain strain (or normal pressure) is designed at some places on the compression garment. Variant values and distribution of strain can only be generated by sewing different 2D patterns...

Ternary Pt-Au-M (M = 3d transition metal) nanoparticles show reduced OH adsorption energies and improved activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) compared to pure Pt nanoparticles, as obtained by density functional theory. The strain and ligand effects in nanoparticles are decoupled and correlated with the extended Pt(111) surface for benchmarking. The ternary metal in the core allows f...

3D formulation of incremental relations, describing pre-failure deformations of granular soils, is presented. The starting point are respective equations formulated previously for the axi-symmetrical configuration, as that in the tri-axial apparatus. These relations, proposed for particular configuration, are generalized in the form of tensor equations for the strain increments. Similarly, the ...

Nowadays, equal channel angular pressing, known as the ECAP process, is one of the most popular methods for manufacturing ultra-fine grained (UFG) materials. In this paper, Ecap process has been carried out on pure copper and 6012 aluminum alloy up to six passes by route . Principal attention was paid to the influence of parameters such as diameter, material, and the height of billet on mechani...

Having knowledge of stability of an underground space depends on stresses and strains around it. Creating underground tunnels leads to significant changes in the rock mass stress. Therefore, to achieve the necessary stability, stresses and deformations around the tunnel must be examined carefully. Usually, stress-strain behavior analysis is conducted in two-dimensional mode. This paper was cond...
