A direct α-functionalization of simple aldehydes under N-Heterocyclic Carbene (NHC) catalysis and direct generation of ester enolate equivalents from nonfunctionalized aldehydes are disclosed. The catalysis involves selective enolate generation from an oxidatively generated NHC-bounded ester intermediate as a key step. The ester enolate intermediates undergo stereoselective reactions with enone...

Aldehydes, alcohols and acids were tested for their ability to support acetylene reduction and oxygen consumption by Rhizobium japonicum bacteroids isolated from soybean nodules. Several alcohols and aldehydes increased acetylene reduction and oxygen uptake. This is consistent with the concept that the plant nodule cytosol can metabolize carbohydrate via anaerobic fermentative pathways.

An enantioselective organocatalytic alpha-trifluoromethylation of aldehydes has been accomplished using a commercially available, electrophilic trifluoromethyl source. The merging of Lewis acid and organocatalysis provides a new strategy for the enantioselective construction of trifluoromethyl stereogenicity, an important chiral synthon for pharmaceutical, materials, and agrochemical applicatio...

Drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes results in the formation of reactive aldehydes in the lung, which are capable of forming adducts with several proteins and DNA. Acetaldehyde and malondialdehyde are the major aldehydes generated in high levels in the lung of subjects with alcohol use disorder who smoke cigarettes. In addition to the above aldehydes, several other aldehydes like 4-hydroxyn...

Lipid peroxidation is one of the consequences of environmental stress in plants and leads to the accumulation of highly toxic, reactive aldehydes. One of the processes to detoxify these aldehydes is their oxidation into carboxylic acids catalyzed by NAD(P)+-dependent ALDHs (aldehyde dehydrogenases). We investigated kinetic parameters of two Arabidopsis thaliana family 3 ALDHs, the cytosolic ALD...

The recent discovery of the production of anti-proliferative aldehydes in a variety of microalgal species has lead to considerable investigation into the effects of these toxins on aquatic invertebrates. Studies have, however, rarely considered the impact pollutants may have on grazer responses to algal toxins. In this study, the acute toxicities of five aldehydes to the rotifer Brachionus plic...
