BPS black hole configurations which break half of supersymmetry in the theory of N = 2 d = 5 supergravity coupled to an arbitrary number of abelian vector multiplets are discussed. A general class of solutions comprising all known BPS rotating black hole solutions is obtained.

Using a recently developed generalized Weyl formalism, we construct an asymptotically flat, static vacuum Einstein solution that describes a superposition of multiple five-dimensional Schwarzschild black holes. The spacetime exhibits a U(1)×U(1) rotational symmetry. It is argued that for certain choices of parameters, the black holes are collinear and so may be regarded as a five-dimensional ge...

Theories of partial supersymmetry breaking N = 2 → N = 1 in four dimensions are derived by coupling the N = 2 massless gravitino multiplet to N = 2 supergravity in five dimensions and performing a generalized dimensional reduction on S/Z2 with the Scherk-Schwarz mechanism. These theories agree with results that were previously derived from four dimensions.

Anisotropy of interfacial energy is the principal driving force for material microstructure evolution yet its origins remain uncertain and a quantitative description lacking. We present and justify a concise hypothesis on the topography and topology of the functional space of grain boundary energies and, based on this hypothesis, construct a closed-form function that quantitatively describes en...

Reasoning does not work well when done in isolation from its significance, both to the needs and interests of an agent and with respect to the wider world. Moreover, those issues may best be handled with a new sort of data structure that goes beyond the knowledge base and incorporates aspects of perceptual knowledge and even more, in which a kind of anticipatory action may be key. Out of the Iv...

We give a pedagogical introduction to the attractor mechanism. We begin by developing the formalism for the simplest example of spherically symmetric black holes in five dimensions which preserve supersymmetry. We then discuss the refinements needed when spherical symmetry is relaxed. This is motivated by rotating black holes and, especially, black rings. An introduction to nonBPS attractors is...

We construct a complete five dimensional Quark-Lepton symmetric model, with all fields propagating in the bulk. The extra dimension forms an S1/Z2 × Z 2 orbifold with the zero mode fermions corresponding to standard model quarks localised at one fixed point. Zero modes corresponding to left(right)-chiral leptons are localised at (near) the other fixed point. This localisation pattern is motivat...

We obtain new stationary charged solutions of five-dimensional minimal supergravity. We first obtain purely dipole charged solutions, by extending a technique that we developed for five-dimensional Ricci-flat metrics in a previous paper, which could be viewed as being analogous to a four-dimensional construction by Demianski and Plebanski. The further introduction of electric charge is achieved...

We present a full superconformal tensor calculus in five spacetime dimensions in which the Weyl multiplet has 32 Bose plus 32 Fermi degrees of freedom. It is derived using dimensional reduction from the 6D superconformal tensor calculus. We present two types of 32+32 Weyl multiplets, a vector multiplet, linear multiplet, hypermultiplet and nonlinear multiplet. Their superconformal transformatio...
