In clinical microbiology, molecular genetic techniques are increasingly being used to detect and/or differentiate uncultivable, anaerobic, or fastidious microorganisms. During the past decade, DNA probe hybridization and in vitro amplification by polymerase chain reaction have also been introduced to detect oral pathogens. The present review describes experiences with methods and commercial tes...

Tests were performed with 104 anaerobic microorganisms to evaluate the thioglycolate disk elution technique for the detection of resistance to cefoperazone and cefoperazone-sulbactam. An unacceptably high false-resistance rate and a poor reproducibility record make the disk elution procedure unsatisfactory for routine testing of this drug or combination of drugs.

Safety of patients and dental personnel requires the appropriate microbiological water quality in dental units. During treatment, patients and dental workers are exposed both to direct contact with bacteria-contaminated water in the form of splatter and with contaminated water aerosol emitted during work by unit handpieces, including rotating and ultrasonic instruments. The aim of the study was...

Composition of the intestinal microbiota The number of bacteria that make up the microbiota is greater than the number of cells in a human being. In its composition four families of bacteria stand out: Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, and Proteobacteria. Up to several years ago, it was estimated that a newborn had a sterile digestive system. However, the presence of microorganisms has...

UNLABELLED BACKGROUND Gradenigo's syndrome is a rare disease, which is characterized by the triad of the following conditions: suppurative otitis media, pain in the distribution of the first and the second division of trigeminal nerve, and abducens nerve palsy. The full triad may often not be present, but can develop if the condition is not treated correctly. CASE PRESENTATION We report a ...

BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to investigate the potential contributory role of laparoscopic appendectomy in the occurrence of postoperative intra-abdominal infections. METHODS A prospective single-center study including 48 patients who underwent laparoscopic appendectomy was conducted between August 2010 and September 2011. Two peritoneal samples were obtained from each patient in the...

BACKGROUND Optimal blood culture performance is critical for successful diagnosis and treatment of sepsis. To understand the status of blood culture, we investigated several aspects of the procedure at 9 university hospitals. METHODS The process of ordering blood culture sets and sampling volume for adults and children was investigated from January 2010 to April 2010, while the positive rate ...

The ruminant animal is dependent upon anaerobic microorganisms for the digestion of plant materials in the rumen. The resultant microbial cells and fermentation acids are primary nutrients for the animal. Polysaccharides, such as hemicelluloses, are only partially degraded because of the chemical complexities of plant materials and biochemical processes involved in degradation.

The addition of 5 microgram of clindamycin per ml to a modified Todd-Hewitt growth medium permitted the ready enumeration of Eikenella corrodens from deep periodontal lesions because it allowed differential growth amongst the periodontal pocket gram-negative microaerophilic-anaerobic flora, maximized the numbers of E. corrodens in such culture, and inhibited the growth of most of the other conf...
