A human rotavirus complement-fixing (CF) antigen, prepared by purification of large volumes of fluid feces collected from children with winter diarrhea, was used to study the development and persistence of antibody in children with diarrhea and the prevalence of rotavirus antibody in Melbourne. In children with diarrhea, antibody rises were detectable within 4 to 6 weeks of the onset of illness...

BACKGROUND How antimalarial antibodies are acquired and maintained during pregnancy and boosted after reinfection with Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax is unknown. METHODS A nested case-control study of 467 pregnant women (136 Plasmodium-infected cases and 331 uninfected control subjects) in northwestern Thailand was conducted. Antibody levels to P. falciparum and P. vivax merozoite...

Five lots of phase 1 Q fever antigen suitable for use as vaccine were prepared utilizing the Freon-brushite method of antigen purification. Antigen concentration levels were initially adjusted turbidimetrically and later confirmed by antibody response in guinea pigs. Data showed that all lots were essentially identical in purity and antigenicity.

The serum immunoglobulin G and M responses induced by immunization of mice with temperature-sensitive mutant A/10/25 of Pseudomonas aeruginosa were evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. These antibody responses were immunotype specific, and the immunoglobulin G antibody level, although low, was still significant by day 52 after vaccination.

Neutralizing (nAbs) and high affinity binding antibodies may be critical for an efficacious HIV-1 vaccine. We characterized virus-specific nAbs and binding antibody responses over 21 months in eight HIV-1 subtype C chronically infected individuals with heterogeneous rates of disease progression. Autologous nAb titers of study exit plasma against study entry viruses were significantly higher tha...

Significant borreliacidal antibody was induced in volunteers and hamsters 60 days after primary and secondary vaccination with high concentrations of recombinant outer surface protein A (rOspA). However, the borreliacidal antibody response waned rapidly. Only 1 person had detectable cidal activity 180 days after vaccination. Similarly, the borreliacidal antibody response waned rapidly in hamste...

Selective suppression of the total IgE antibody response has been achieved in rats by injection of rabbit anti-rat epsilon-chain antibodies. This IgE-specific suppression was maintained during the course of a natural infection by the nematode Trichinella spiralis. Depletion of the IgE antibody response resulted in a marked reduction of the number of eosinophils attracted to the T. spiralis larv...

Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne infection of humans, and its diffusion has increased worldwide. In 2007 an outbreak occurred in Italy. In this study, the antibody response of 133 patients followed up starting from the acute phase of infection was investigated. Antibody titres were periodically scored up to 1 year since the infection: 82.7% of the IgM antibody disappeared within 12 months, and t...

The functional roles of the two polypeptide chains that compose the T cell suppressor factor (TsF) that mediates the antigen-specific and genetically restricted suppressor function were studied by using the heavy or light chains isolated from the conventional TsF or the 11S and 13S mRNA translation products of TsF. Either the heavy or the light chain of mRNA translation products reconstitutes t...

A soluble factor (TRF) produced by mixtures of allogeneic mouse spleen, lymph node, and thymus cells functionally replaces T cells in a primary IgM antibody response to sheep blood cells in vitro. It is now shown that TRF can also reconstitute an IgG antibody response in T cell-deprived spleen cultures derived from preimmunized mice. The optimal time of addition and the amount of TRF required d...
