Despite a considerable interest in prodigiosin, the mechanism of its antibacterial activity is still poorly understood. In this work, Escherichia coli cells were treated with prodigiosin to determine its antimicrobial effect on bacterial physiology. The effect of prodigiosin was concentration dependent. In prodigiosin treated cells above MIC value no significant DNA damage or cytoplasmic membra...

A simple and efficient method has been developed for the synthesis of various 2-quinoxalinone-3-hydrazone derivatives using microwave irradiation technique. The series of 2-quinoxalinone-3-hydrazone derivatives synthesized, were structurally confirmed by analytical and spectral data and evaluated for their antimicrobial activities. The results showed that this skeletal framework exhibited marke...

While topical antimicrobial agents are indicated for most if not all burn wounds, the choice of a topical agent must consider many factors such as the wound depth, anticipated time to healing, need for surgical intervention, and the known cytotoxicity of the agent. Especially relevant to the pediatric burn patient are the antimicrobial agent's properties related to causing pain or irritation an...

Biopolymer films containing chitosan as antimicrobial agent were obtained. As polymer matrix poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and bacterial cellulose (BC) were used. The films were characterized using FTIR spectroscopy. FTIR spectra of the pure components and of composites films reveal strong interactions between chitosan and PVA and chitosan and bacterial cellulose. These composite films could be use...

In a population-based case-control study of community acquired Clostridium difficile-associated disease (CDAD), we matched 1,233 cases to 12,330 controls. CDAD risk increased 3-fold with use of any antimicrobial agent and 6-fold with use of fluoroquinolones. Prior use of antimicrobial agents did not affect risk for CDAD after 6 months.

Community acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a common medical problem. Over 1.5 million patients annually will be diagnosed with CAP and treated with empiric therapy initially. The vast majority of patients will improve with a single course broad spectrum antimicrobial agent. Rarely a patient will not improve and some may progress on this regimen. Giving a second course of broad spectrum antimicrobial...

Bacterial infections pose a serious public health concern, especially when an infectious disease has a multidrug resistant causative agent. Such multidrug resistant bacteria can compromise the clinical utility of major chemotherapeutic antimicrobial agents. Drug and multidrug resistant bacteria harbor several distinct molecular mechanisms for resistance. Bacterial antimicrobial agent efflux pum...

Antibacterial activity of dressings containing antimicrobials is mostly evaluated using in vitro tests. However, the various methods available differ significantly in their properties and results obtained are influenced by the method selected, micro-organisms used, and extraction method, the degree of solubility or the diffusability of the test-compounds. Here, results on antimicrobial activity...

Methyl-5(or 4)-(3,3-dimethyl-1-triazeno)-imidazole-4(or 5)-carboxylate was shown to have in vitro antimicrobial activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, yeasts, filamentous fungi, and algae. Preliminary studies with mice, experimentally infected with Staphylococcus aureus, have shown that this new antimicrobial agent has in vivo chemotherapeutic activity comparable to that obs...
