We demonstrate assembly of spheroidal Ag nanoparticle clusters, chains and arrays induced by optical binding. Particles with diameters of 40 nm formed ordered clusters and chains in aqueous solution when illuminated by shaped optical fields with a wavelength of 800 nm; specifically, close-packed clusters were formed in cylindrically symmetric optical traps, and linear chains were formed in line...

The Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) is a Square Kilometre Array (SKA) Precursor. The telescope is located at the Murchison Radio–astronomy Observatory (MRO) in Western Australia (WA). The MWA consists of 4096 dipoles arranged into 128 dual polarisation aperture arrays forming a connected element interferometer that cross-correlates signals from all 256 inputs. A hybrid approach to the correlati...

Reconnections among the produced colour dipoles in the Dipole Cascade Model are discussed, and an implementation in the Ariadne program is presented. The reconnections are shown to have only small effects on event shapes at LEP 1, on the W mass determination at LEP 2 and on rapidity gaps in deep inelastic scattering at HERA. Submitted to Z. Phys. Deduce expressions for the force on a permanent Ampèrian magnetic dipole with momentmA (due to a loop of electrical current), and for the force on a permanent Gilbertian magnetic dipolemG (due to a pair of opposite magnetic charges), when the dipoles are (instantaneously at rest in an external electromagnetic field. Experiments have been performed to determine whether a neutron [6] has an Ampèr...

Cells probe their mechanical environment and can change the organization of their cytoskeletons when the elastic and viscous properties of their environment are modified. We use a model in which the forces exerted by small, contractile acto-myosin filaments (e.g., nascent stress fibers in stem cells) on the extracellular matrix are modeled as local force dipoles. In some cases, the strain field...

PURPOSE In this study, we tried to show that EEG and magnetoencephalography (MEG) are clinically complementary to each other and that a combination of both technologies is useful for the precise diagnosis of epileptic focus. METHODS We recorded EEGs and MEGs simultaneously and analyzed dipoles in seven patients with intractable localization-related epilepsy. MEG dipoles were analyzed by using...

Self-assembly of components larger than molecules into ordered arrays is an efficient way of preparing microstructured materials with interesting mechanical and optical properties. Although crystallization of identical particles or particles of different sizes or shapes can be readily achieved, the repertoire of methods to assemble binary lattices of particles of the same sizes but with differe...

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short, endogenous non-coding RNAs that function as guide molecules to regulate transcription of their target messenger RNAs. Several methods including low-density qPCR arrays are being increasingly used to profile the expression of these molecules in a variety of different biological conditions. Reliable analysis of expression profiles demands removal of technical variati...

A new gamma camera based on hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) pixel arrays to be used in nuclear medicine is introduced. Various performance characteristics of a-Si:H imagers are reviewed and compared with those of currently used equipment. An important component in the a-Si:H imager is the scintillator screen. A new approach for fabrication of high resolution CsI(Tl) scintillator layers,...
