Twenty-four patients with myotonic dystrophy underwent computed tomographic examination of the skull and brain. The results were compared with those of 20 normal subjects of similar age and sex distribution. Microcephaly and thickening of the calvarium were frequently observed. A case of pseudohypoparathyroidism in a middle-aged female presenting with severe Parkinsonism is reported. Correction of serum calcium led to marked clinical improvement suggesting that symptoms and signs were exacerbated by hypocalcaemia and tetanic spasm. Calcification of the basal ganglia was not detected on skull X-ray but was revealed by computerized axial tomography.

We present a case of hypoparathyroidism, demonstrating extensive intracranial calcification, not only in basal ganglia, but also outside the extrapyramidal system. The patient presented with an unexplained epileptifors disorder, accompanied by extrapyramidal dysfunction in the form of choreoathetosis and hemiballismus. Hemiballismus is reported for the first time to our knowledge in association...

Basal ganglia calcification is one of the features of chronic hypocalcaemia.1 However, extensive intracranial symmetrical calcifications outside the basal ganglia have been reported rarely in patients with chronic hypocalcaemia secondary to post-surgical hypoparathyroidism. A 62-year-old woman who underwent subtotal thyroidectomy 15 years ago presented with long-term paraesthesiae in the distal...
