Legumes, such as black beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and chickpeas (Cicer arietinum L.), have a low glycemic index, and may reduce the glycemic load of meals in which they are included. Although the low glycemic response of beans consumed alone has been documented, few studies have examined the glycemic response to traditional food combinations such as black beans and rice or chickpeas and rice...

The amount and form of nitrogen lost from the human small intestine and the dietary factors which influence it have been studied in six ileostomists. Over a six day period the subjects were fed a series of diets including low nitrogen (LND) 0.17 g N/day, LND + soya beans (5.87 g N/day) and a high fibre diet (HFD) (10.6 g N/day). The soya beans were fed either whole or pureed to test the effect ...

The objective of this study was to determine how long ground coffee beans could be stored at room and freezing temperatures before sensory changes could be detected, and to identify specific attribute changes associated with this storage. Ground beans were stored for 0 (fresh), 1, 2 and 3 weeks at room and freezing temperatures. Coffee was prepared from each of these treatments and difference t...

Beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) are among the main sources of protein and minerals. The cooking of the grains is imperative, due to reduction of the effect of some toxic and antinutritional substances, as well as increase of protein digestibility. In this study, the effects of cooking on albumins, globulins, prolamins, and glutelins concentration and determination of Fe associated with proteins f...

Background: Evidence shows that iron deficiency in adulthood may affect cognitive performance, possibly by disrupting neurotransmitter regulation or brain energy metabolism. Women of reproductive age (WRA) are among those who are most vulnerable to iron deficiency; however, they have been largely ignored in the literature relating iron status to cognition. Objective: Our aim was to determine the...

Glutamine synthetase (GS) is an octameric enzyme. The nodule cytosol of the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) has two major types of GS subunit polypeptides ([beta] and [gamma]). As a result, nine different isozymes containing varied proportions of [beta] and [gamma] can be generated. The isozymes are resolvable by native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Staining the gel for GS activity re...

In this ‘feasibility study’ the influence of roasting on the sulfur speciation in Mexican coffee beans was investigated by sulfur K-XANES spectroscopy. Spectra of green and slightly roasted beans could be fitted to a linear combination of ‘standard’ reference spectra for biological samples, whereas longer roasting obviously involves formation of additional sulfur compounds in considerable amounts.

In this paper we show that there is more than one way to skin a rabbit, by giving a couple of approaches to solving the problem: How many towers of all heights can be made if you have available a certain specified number of baked bean cans and spaghetti cans, but need not use them all in any one tower? We show the relevance of this problem, and more especially the techniques used to solve it, f...

In the article fuzzy bean based classifier is given. Three different type of structures are tested in the classifier. Fuzzy bean based classifier is supervised learning method and with proper optimization scheme promising results were covered. Differential evolution algorithm was used in optimizing the required parameters. Classifier was applied to diagnosis of liver-disorders with 73.9% classi...

Background: Phylogenetically related miRNAs (miRNA families) convey important information of the function and evolution of miRNAs. Due to the special sequence features of miRNAs, pair-wise sequence identity between miRNA precursors alone is often inadequate for unequivocally judging the phylogenetic relationships between miRNAs. Most of the current methods for miRNA classification rely heavily ...
