BACKGROUND Beta-1-3 Glucan is a polysaccharide extracted from Saccharomyces cerevisiae with a possible immunomodulating action that may have a favourable action on asthma symptoms and other allergic diseases. An experimental study carried out using a murine respiratory model detected a decrease in pulmonary tissue eosinophilia, as well as an increase in Interleukin-10 (IL-10) after glucan use. ...

Functionally, the innate immune system of immature chickens is inefficient during the first week posthatch. This immunological inefficiency enables pathogens such as Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis (SE) to invade and colonize the visceral organs of immature chickens. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of purified beta-glucan as an immunomodulator of the innate immune...

A critical component of host innate immunity is recognition of pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) by pattern recognition receptors (PRRs). Dectin-1 is the primary PRR for exogenous beta-glucan, a component of fungal and bacterial cell walls. A previous study conducted in our laboratory demonstrated that administration of beta-glucan as a feed additive resulted in increased innate im...

A beta-(1-5)-galactofuran was isolated and characterized from fraction F1S (alkali- and water-soluble) of the cell wall of most of the species of Eupenicillium. In E. cryptum, E. euglaucum and E. nepalense the galactan contained galactofuranose with different linkages in addition to beta-(1-5). Fraction F1I (alkali-soluble, water-insoluble) was an alpha-glucan in certain species while in others...

Caspofungin inhibits synthesis of beta-D-1,3 glucan, essential to cell walls in Candida and Aspergillus spp., but activity against less common molds is largely uncharacterized. We demonstrate that caspofungin inhibits beta-D-1,3 glucan synthesis and reduces in vitro growth of clinical isolates from the genera Alternaria, Curvularia, Scedosporium, Acremonium, Bipolaris, and Trichoderma.

Mushrooms have unique sensory properties and nutritional values as well as health benefits due to their bioactive compounds, especially beta-glucans. Well-known edible and medicinal mushroom species as well as uncommon or unknown species representing interesting sources of bioactive beta-glucans have been widely studied. Commercially cultivated and wild growing mushrooms were analysed for their...

Studies on the relationship between symptoms in indoor air and the amount of airborne (1-->3)-beta-D-glucan were reviewed. Relationships were found for symptoms and objective tests of airways inflammation. The data suggest that (1-->3)-beta-D-glucan could be a causative agent.

OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of beta-D-glucan on the experimental diabetic rat colon anastomosis model. BACKGROUND Beta-D-glucan is a commonly used macrophage activator and promotes wound healing by increasing macrophage infiltration into the wound. The decrease in the function of macrophages and impaired wound healing can be observed in diabetes mellitus (D...

Deletion of GAS1/GGP1/CWH52 results in a lower beta-glucan content of the cell wall and swollen, more spherical cells (L. Popolo, M. Vai, E. Gatti, S. Porello, P. Bonfante, R. Balestrini, and L. Alberghina, J. Bacteriol. 175:1879-1885, 1993; A. F. J. Ram, S. S. C. Brekelmans, L. J. W. M. Oehlen, and F. M. Klis, FEBS Lett. 358:165-170, 1995). We show here that gas1delta cells release beta1,3-glu...
