Cryptochromes (CRYs) are blue-light photoreceptors with known or presumed functions in light-dependent and light-independent gene regulation in plants and animals. Although the photochemistry of plant CRYs has been studied in some detail, the photochemical behavior of animal cryptochromes remains poorly defined in part because it has been difficult to purify animal CRYs with their flavin cofact...

Fluorescence spectroscopy was used to characterize blue light responses from chloroplasts of adaxial guard cells from Pima cotton (Gossypium barbadense) and coleoptile tips from corn (Zea mays). The chloroplast response to blue light was quantified by measurements of the blue light-induced enhancement of a red light-stimulated quenching of chlorophyll a fluorescence. In adaxial (upper) guard ce...

Increasing trend in global population and climate changes are driving forces to shift toward the use of vertical farms with artificial lighting (VFALs). The main downside of VFALs is inefficient electrical usage. High efficiency and economy cost of light-emitting diodes (LED) are going to make VFALs a promising type of farming in future. Each individual species needs unique light treatment in o...

Since the early days of human life on the Earth, our skin has been exposed to different levels of light. Recently, due to inevitable consequences of modern life, humans are not exposed to adequate levels of natural light during the day but they are overexposed to relatively high levels of artificial light at night. Skin is a major target of oxidative stress and the link between aging and oxidat...

Here we report a cavitand with a photochemical switch as one of the container walls. The azo-arene switch undergoes photoisomerization when subjected to UV light producing a self-fulfilled cavitand. This process is thermally and photochemically reversible. The reported cavitand binds small molecules and these guests can be ejected from the cavitand through this photochemical process.

Photochemical smog is the result of complex chemistry taking place when sunlight irradiates the atmosphere laden with organic gases and nitrous oxides. High temperatures and bright sun light favour photochemical smog. The secondary pollutants, formed from the organic gases and nitrous oxides, are more aggressive and dangerous as the first pollutants. Secondary pollutants are O3, organic nitrate...

We examined the photochemical properties of well-ordered multilayer films of titania nanosheets prepared on quartz-glass substrate using the layer-by-layer deposition method. The photocatalytic decomposition of gaseous 2-propanol and bleaching of Methylene Blue dye under UV light illumination were measured to evaluate the photocatalytic oxidation ability. Photoinduced hydrophilicity was also st...

Light availability is considered a key factor regulating the thermal sensitivity of reef building corals, where excessive excitation of photosystem II (PSII) further exacerbates pressure on photochemical pathways already compromised by heat stress. Coral symbionts acclimate to changes in light availability (photoacclimation) by continually fine-tuning the photochemical operating efficiency of P...

Described are photochemical studies of the nitric oxide precursors, trans-Cr(L)(ONO)(2)(+) (L = cyclam = 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane, CrONO, or L = mac = 5,7-dimethyl-6-anthracenylcyclam, mac-CrONO) encapsulated in phosphatidylcholine liposomes. The liposomes provide a means to maintain a localized high concentration of NO releasing complexes and are easily modified for in vivo targeting ...

In photosynthetic chains, the kinetics of fluorescence yield depends on the photochemical rates at the level of both Photosystem I and II and thus on the absorption cross section of the photosynthetic units as well as on the coupling between light harvesting complexes and photosynthetic traps. A new set-up is described which, at variance with the commonly used set-ups, uses of a weakly absorbed...
