This demonstration introduces Caterpillar, an open-source Business Process Management System (BPMS) that runs on top of the Ethereum blockchain. Like any BPMS, Caterpillar supports the creation of instances of a process model (captured in the Business Process Model and Notation – BPMN) and allows users to track the state of process instances and to execute tasks thereof. The specificity of Cate...
In this paper we examine the suitability of BPMN for business process modelling, using the Workflow Patterns as an evaluation framework. The Workflow Patterns are a collection of patterns developed for assessing control-flow, data and resource capabilities in the area of Process Aware Information Systems (PAIS). In doing so, we provide a comprehensive evaluation of the capabilities of BPMN, and...
Business Process Modeling and particularly modeling business processes as collaborations is one of the challenges of today enterprise software development. The industry of software development becomes more and more expensive making crucial a correct translation from business idea to implementation to allow for a complete understanding and complete exchange of information between development par...
Actually, business process modeling presents an important issue for public institutions. However, due to the high complexity of public processes and their characterizing requirements, such as legal one, appropriate modeling languages are not really available yet. In this work, we propose an extension of one of the most useful modeling language, namely Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN), ...
In the frame of an overall project concerning the development of an intelligent process-driven framework for crime analysis, the modelling phase of crime analysis processes requires formal approaches being able to capture both the vague nature of forensic data and the uncertainties and conjectures characterizing the inference structures of this domain. In this context, a first analysis on the f...
We propose an efficient algorithm that enacts the control-flow of BPMN, in particular the inclusive Or-join gateway. The original algorithm for enacting Or-joins in BPMN 2.0 needs, upon each token move in the diagram, linear time in the number of edges of the diagram to find out whether a given Or-join is enabled, whereas our proposal essentially needs only constant time to do so.
The concept of choreography has emerged over the past years as a fundamental concept for capturing collaborative processes. The latest version of the Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN 2.0) introduces the choreography diagram as a first-class citizen actor. After having evaluated BPMN 2.0 in a previous work, we discuss here the new challenges, future work and the open questions about the ...
The so-called Internet of Things (IoT) that comprises interconnected physical devices such as sensor networks and its technologies like Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is increasingly adopted in many industries and thus becomes highly relevant for process modeling and execution. As BPMN 2.0 does not yet consider the idiosyncrasies of real-world entities we suggest new modeling concepts fo...
Evaluation of modelling languages is important both to be able to select the most suitable languages according to the needs, and to improve existing languages. In this paper Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN) is presented and analytically evaluated according to the Semiotic Quality Framework. BPMN is a functionally oriented language well suited for modeling within the domain of business ...
