Campylobacter jejuni has long been recognized as a main food-borne pathogen in many parts of the world. Natural reservoirs include a wide variety of domestic and wild birds and mammals, whose intestines offer a suitable biological niche for the survival and dissemination of the organism. Understanding the genetic basis of the biology and pathogenicity of C. jejuni is vital to prevent and contro...

Deletion of the lipooligosaccharide biosynthesis region (Cj1132c to Cj1152c) from the genome of Campylobacter jejuni NCTC11168 shows that the core is not required for viability. The mutant was attenuated for growth and has increased sensitivity to antibiotics and detergents. Natural transformation and invasion of cultured host cells was abolished.

Campylobacter is now the most frequently reported cause of gastrointestinal disease in England and Wales, yet few isolates are characterized beyond the genus level. The majority of isolates are Campylobacter jejuni (90%), with most of the remainder being Campylobacter coli. We describe an adaptation of the Penner serotyping scheme in which passive hemagglutination has been replaced by detection...

long chronic diarrhoea may be due to Campylobacter jejuni: we were unable to determine any other aetiology and the patient responded to selective treatment for Campylobacter and never relapsed. Campylobacter enteritis is usually a self-limiting illness. Symptoms resolve in less than 10 days, even without antibiotic therapy. Sometimes one needs two or three weeks to be cured. We have found only ...

Campylobacteriosis is the most reported foodborne gastroenteritic disease and poses a serious health burden in industrialized countries. Disease in humans is mainly caused by the zoonotic pathogen Campylobacter jejuni. Due to its wide-spread occurrence in the environment, the epidemiology of Campylobacter remains poorly understood. It is generally accepted, however, that chickens are a natural ...

The occurrence and species distribution of thermophilic Campylobacter was investigated in organic outdoor pigs. An increased exposure of outdoor pigs to C. jejuni from the environment may cause a shift from a normal dominance of C. coli to more C. jejuni, which may imply a concern of reduced food safety. Bacteriological methods for determination of Campylobacter excretion level were combined wi...

INTRODUCTION Campylobacter jejuni (C. jejuni) and Campylobacter coli (C. coli) are the most common bacterial causes of enterocolitis in humans. However, identification of the species level is not always possible using standard biochemical tests. OBJECTIVE Therefore, the goal of this study was to identify these microorganisms by both phenotyping and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique. ...

The nutritional requirements for 439 Campylobacter jejuni isolates and 46 Campylobacter coli isolates were determined by using a previously described chemically defined medium, campylobacter defined medium. With this medium, 45% of both human and nonhuman C. jejuni isolates demonstrated auxotrophic requirements. None of the 46 C. coli isolates studied demonstrated requirements for amino acids o...

The small-scale mobile poultry-processing unit (MPPU) produced raw poultry products are of particular food safety concern due to exemption of USDA poultry products inspection act. Limited studies reported the microbial quality and safety of MPPU-processed poultry carcasses. This study evaluated the Salmonella and Campylobacter prevalence in broiler ceca and on MPPU-processed carcasses and effic...
