AIMS A population based cross sectional survey was conducted to determine the magnitude of cataract blindness and the barriers to uptake of cataract services in a rural community of northern Nigeria. METHODS 1461 people out of 1924 registered eligible people were examined. The study population was chosen by two stage cluster random sampling. In the first sampling stage 15 villages were random...
PURPOSE To determine whether poor fetal growth, as determined by size at birth, is associated with an increased risk of age-related cataract. METHODS A total of 741 men and women born in Sheffield, England between 1922 and 1930 and whose size at birth was available were traced and invited to take part in the study. Of these, 392 (53%) attended for ophthalmic examination. Lens opacity in these...
A family with an autosomal dominant form of congenital cataract, total nuclear cataract, was examined for genetic linkage between the cataract locus and 30 marker loci. Close linkage was excluded for all of the 21 informative loci. There was no significant evidence for linkage of the cataract locus with any of the marker loci.
This study evaluated the effectiveness of sutureless cataract surgery using a clear corneal incision in canine cataract surgery. Sutured cataract surgery was compared with sutureless cataract surgery in terms of the refractive error, the alteration of intraocular pressure (IOP) over 28 days post-operatively, and neovascularization on the cornea. An average of 1.33 ± 0.58 D astigmatism was induc...
PURPOSE To investigate maternal, demographic, and pre- and perinatal risk factors for idiopathic congenital/infantile (ICI) cataract. METHODS Based on national registries, a cohort of all children born in Denmark and aged 0 to 17 years during 1977 to 2001 was established, and congenital/infantile cataract cases were identified. Cases of unknown/idiopathic cause were included in the study. Ass...
Accumulation of sorbitol in the pathogenesis of cataract in susceptible subjects has long been an issue. Sorbitol dehydrogenase (SDH) activity in 25 diabetes mellitus (DM) patients and 15 patients having cataract was investigated using 10 subjects without diabetes or cataract as the control. Results of fasting plasma glucose assay done on the DM patients showed a mean range of 64 – 144mg/dl in ...

the aim of this study was to report a new cause of cataract, namely snake bite induced cataract in a dog. a 3-year-old male mongrel dog was referred to our clinic for the assessment of cataract in both eyes. the dog was bitten by a snake nearly 4 months ago. a 40 dioptre acrylic lens with 13 mm haptics was implanted into the lens capsule. in the left eye, posterior synechia was detected in the ...
PURPOSE To describe the relationship of refractive errors and axial ocular dimensions and age-related cataract. METHODS Population-based, cross-sectional survey of ocular diseases among Chinese men and women aged 40 to 81 years (n = 1232) living in the Tanjong Pagar district in Singapore. As part of the examination, refraction and corneal curvature were determined with an autorefractor, with ...
