The first part of this article gives a brief overview of the four levels of the Chomsky hierarchy, with a special emphasis on context-free and regular languages. It then recapitulates the arguments why neither regular nor context-free grammar is sufficiently expressive to capture all phenomena in the natural language syntax. In the second part, two refinements of the Chomsky hierarchy are revie...

The recent work on automata whose variables and parameters are real numbers has focused largely on questions about computational complexity and tractability. It is also revealing to examine the metric relations that such systems induce on automata via the natural metrics on their parameter spaces. This brings the theory of computational classiication closer to theories of learning and statistic...

The characterization of the structure of palindromic regular and palindromic context-free languages is described by S. Horváth, J. Karhumäki, and J. Kleijn in 1987. In this paper alternative proofs are given for these characterizations.

Parikh theorem was originally stated and proved by Rohkit Parikh in MIT research report in 1961. Many different proofs of this classical theorems were produced then; our goal is to give another proof using Chomsky-Schutzenberger representation theorem. We present the proof which doesn't use any formal language theory tool at all except the representation theorem, just some linear algebra.

In type logical categorial grammar the analysis of an expression is a resource-conscious proof. Anaphora represents a particular challenge to this approach in that the antecedent resource is multiplied in the semantics. This duplication, which corresponds logically to the structural rule of contraction, may be treated lexically or syntactically. Furthermore, anaphora is subject to constraints, ...

El presente trabajo tiene por objetivo proponer un análisis crítico del debate entre Noam Chomsky y Michel Foucault a partir de las herramientas que proporciona el enfoque pragmadialéctico. En particular, se pretende contrastar conjunto etapas reglas discusión Frans van Eemeren Rob Grootendorst apuntan en su libro Una teoría sistemática la argumentación (2011) con antes mencionado para definir ...

In this review we re-evaluate the recursion-only hypothesis, advocated by Fitch, Hauser and Chomsky (Hauser, Chomsky & Fitch, 2002; Fitch, Hauser & Chomsky, 2005). According to the recursion-only hypothesis, the property that distinguishes human language from animal communication systems is recursion, which refers to the potentially infinite embedding of one linguistic representation within ano...

1. Introductory Remarks 1 We want to emphasize the extent to which HPSG is intellectually indebted to a wide range of recent research traditions in syntax (principally nonderivational approaches such as categorial grammar (CG), generalized phrase structure grammar (GPSG), arc pair grammar (APG), and lexical-functional grammar (LFG)), semantics (especially situation semantics), and computer scie...
