An analytical expression of Coulomb interaction between a sphere and a cylindrical rod was derived. Along with a recently reported van der Waals interaction expression, the derived Coulomb interaction expression, for the first time, allows one to quantitatively evaluate the activation energy in the oriented attachment growth of colloidal nanorods.
We developed a polymerized crystalline colloidal array (PCCA) photonic crystal sensing material that senses the organophosphorus compound parathion at ultratrace concentrations in aqueous solutions. A periodic array of colloidal particles is embedded in a hydrogel network with a lattice spacing such that it Bragg diffracts visible light. The molecular recognition agent for the sensor is the enz...
We study thermal convection in a colloidal glass of Laponite in formation. Low concentration preparation are submitted to destabilizing vertical temperature gradient, and present a gradual transition from a turbulent convective state to a steady conductive state as their viscosity increases. The time spent under convection is found to depend strongly on sample concentration, decreasing exponent...
Water soluble colloidal nanoparticles possess huge surface negative charge and this provides their colloidal stability [1]. The surface charge, therefore, ultimately demonstrate the overall behavior of the nanoparticles irrespective of core material. We demonstrate fluorescence based dual emission polarity sensor that is based upon hydroxyflavone derivative [2]. The NH2 group at position 7 faci...
We developed an intelligent polymerized crystalline colloidal array (IPCCA) photonic crystal sensing material which reversibly senses the organophosphate compound methyl paraoxon at micromolar concentrations in aqueous solutions. A periodic array of colloidal particles is embedded in a poly-2-hydroxyethylacrylate hydrogel. The particle lattice spacing is such that the array Bragg-diffracts visi...
The formation of colloidal gels is strongly dependent on the volume fraction of the system and the strength of the interactions between the colloids. Here we explore very dilute solutions by the means of numerical simulations and show that, in the absence of hydrodynamic interactions and for sufficiently strong interactions, percolating colloidal gels can be realised at very low values of the v...
The ability to reconfigure elementary building blocks from one structure to another is key to many biological systems. Bringing the intrinsic adaptability of biological systems to traditional synthetic materials is currently one of the biggest scientific challenges in material engineering. Here we introduce a new design concept for the experimental realization of self-assembling systems with bu...
Liquid crystals are mostly formed by self-assembly of organic molecules. In contrast, inorganic materials available as liquid crystals are limited. Here we report the development of liquid-crystalline (LC) hydroxyapatite (HAp), which is an environmentally friendly and biocompatible biomineral. Its alignment behavior, magneto-optical properties, and atomic-scale structures are described. We succ...
Dipolar particles are fundamental building blocks in nature and technology, yet the effect of particle anisotropy is seldom explored. Here, we fabricate colloidal silica rods coated with a hemicylindrical magnetic layer to satisfy multiple criteria: nearly monodisperse, easily imaged and magnetic interaction that dominates over gravity. We confirm long-predicted features of dipolar assembly and...
A hypothesis about (transient) colloidal stability as a controlling mechanism for particle formation in SBA-15 is presented. The hypothesis is based on results from both in situ and ex situ investigations, including cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM), UV-vis spectroscopy, and dynamic light scattering (DLS). Cryo-TEM images show that particles grow via the formation of silica-...
