There are a number of differential diagnoses for crystal deposits in the cornea. With the presence of a corneal epithelial defect, the differential diagnosis can be narrowed down to either infective causes or deposits from topical medications. This report describes a case of crystal deposits in the cornea from the use of Vitamin C eye drops.

We demonstrate experimentally that a one-dimensional photonic crystal with a homeotropic nematic liquid crystal defect behaves as a polarization-sensitive nonlinear all-optical device. We study statics and dynamics of the nonlinear optical response for linearly and circularly polarized beams and show enhanced light sensitivity and polarization self-modulation effects.

We demonstrate the existence of vortex soliton solutions in photonic crystal fibers. We analyze the role played by the photonic crystal fiber defect in the generation of optical vortices. An analytical prediction for the angular dependence of the amplitude and phase of the vortex solution based on group theory is also provided. Furthermore, all the analysis is performed in the non-paraxial regime.

In this Letter, we propose defect-mode lasing from a one-dimensional asymmetric photonic structure with dye-doped nematic liquid crystal as a central defect layer. The local field intensity of the distinguished single defect mode at the overlapped photonic band edges is drastically enhanced by the asymmetric structure consisting of two distinct multilayer photonic crystals. With high density of...

We consider bound states in the continuum (BICs) a 1D multilayered system of an anisotropic defect layer embedded into photonic crystal. analytically demonstrate that crystal supports accidental BICs. These BICs can be transformed to high-Q resonances by variation one system's parameters. At same time are remarkably robust sense true BIC recovered further tuning any other parameters leading tun...

Photonic crystal slab cavities were investigated for increased light-matter interaction based on selective placement of sublattice hole sized defect holes inside L3 cavities. A multiple-hole defect (MHD) consisting of three defect holes placed in the regions of highest cavity mode field intensity were demonstrated through finite-difference time-domain simulations and experiments to exhibit the ...

Oxygen vacancy motion and agglomeration into Magnéli phases are often associated with resistive switching in TiO2 [1-2]. However, the defect distribution and changes of device resistance are still poorly linked and require direct analysis. Extensive ex situ analysis has lead to proposed switching mechanisms that invoke defect formation/motion, but direct observation of defect evolution is still...

The dispersion of line-defect modes in silicon-on-insulator photonic crystal waveguides is explored by means of angleand polarization-resolved micro-reflectance measurements. The frequency-wave vector range accessible to the experiments is greatly expanded by the use of attenuated total reflectance, in addition to the standard one, thereby allowing one to study both truly guided (evanescent) an...

Photonic defect modes induced by in situ formation of an ill-defined defect layer is demonstrated in a cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC). The local deformation of the one-dimensionally periodic helical structure is achieved by means of the thermodielectric effect, which alters the pitch in the middle of the cholesteric structure. The defect-mode peak in the photonic band gap appears in the trans...

Recently the hierarchical defect substructures were observed experimentally in several metals and alloys before and after fracture. The general models of crystal defect aggregation with appearance hierarchical defect substructures are proposed and considered in the wide range of scales. Their general group analysis is performed, and symmetries of the governing equations are identified. The mode...
