X-ray crystallography showcases the distinct self-association and hydrogen-bonding patterns of organic silanediols, R2Si(OH)2, with bifunctional heterocycles for supramolecular assembly. Diffusion-ordered spectroscopy (DOSY) studies identify the dominant hydrogen-bonding patterns and structures in solution, which correlate with solid-state patterns at high concentrations.
A rounding error analysis is presented for a divide-and-conquer algorithm to solve linear systems with block Hessenberg matrices. Conditions are derived under which the algorithm computes a stable solution. The algorithm is shown to be stable for block diagonally dominant matrices and for M-matrices.
We consider the fundamental solution of a simple hypoelliptic stochastic partial differential equation in which the first-order term is modulated by white noise. We derive some short-time asymptotic formulæ. We discover that the form of the dominant short-time asymptotics depends nontrivially upon the interplay between the geometry of the noisy first-order term and the geometry defined by the h...
Using an iterative solution in Laplace-Fourier space, we supply a rigorous mathematical proof for the long-time asymptotics of reversible binding in one dimension. The asymptotic power law and its concentration dependent prefactor result from diffusional and many-body effects which, unlike for the corresponding irreversible reaction and in classical chemical kinetics, play a dominant role in sh...
A new canonical scattering problem consisting of the propagation of the dominant TEM mode at the finite-length impedance discontinuity in the outer conductor of a coaxial waveguide is solved. The contributions from the successive impedance discontinuities are accounted for through the solution of a modified Wiener-Hopf equation. Some graphical results displaying the reflection and transmission ...
We consider a class of SchrÄodinger equations with a symmetric double-well potential and an external, both repulsive and attractive, nonlinear perturbation. We show that, under certain conditions, the reduction of the time-dependent equation to a two-mode equation gives the dominant term of the solution with a precise estimate of the error.
We present a memory efficient parallel algorithm for the solution of tridiagonal linear systems of equations that are diagonally dominant on a very large number of processors. Our algorithm can be viewed as a parallel partitioning algorithm. We illustrate its performance using some examples. Based on this partitioning algorithm, we introduce a recursive version that has logarithmic communicatio...
Browser technologies for handled devices are one of several key enablers for the mobile Internet. Of the competing browser technologies, Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) emerges as the dominant solution for second-generation systems. In this context, the paper provides a brief background to WAP and goes on to compare it against competing technologies and solutions.
