たくさんの情報を遠くまで運べる光通信技術の進歩により，スマートフォンなどで便利に情報をやりとりできる時代です．光通信はどのように行われているのか，そういった疑問に答えるために，発光ダイオードやレーザダイオードを光らせて，光に音を乗せて送ってみます．本稿では，手軽に入手できる光部品，電子部品で電子回路を組み立て作る光送信機と光受信機を紹介します．光無線通信，可視光通信，光ファイバ通信を体感できます．現実の光通信で使われている技術の系譜について文献等を引用しながら解説します．
