— This paper attempts to look at the fundamental problem of fault detection and isolation (FDI) in nonlinear systems. Using the idea of input reconstruction by means of dynamic inversion the authors first discuss the properties of input (or fault) observability in linear systems. The extension of the results to nonlinear systems as well as the mathematical conditions of the calculation of the i...

The objective of ESPRIT-project 6731 FTMPS [1] is to develop techniques and system software to integrate Fault Tolerance in Massively Parallel Systems [2] . This covers the whole range from error detection, over fault-diagnosis and fault isolation to system and application recovery. Important is the research for applicability in massively parallel systems as well as the development of system so...

--The Motor Current Signature Analysis (MCSA) is considered the most popular fault detection method now a day because it can easily detect the common machine fault such as turn to turn short ckt, cracked /broken rotor bars, bearing deterioration etc. The present paper discusses the fundamentals of Motor Current Signature Analysis (MCSA) plus condition monitoring of the induction motor using MCS...

In this work we present a formal approach to the design of Fault Detection and Identification (FDI) components. We define a comprehensive language for the specification of FDI, and discuss how to check whether a given FDI component fulfills its specification. Then, we propose an automatic procedure to synthesize an FDI component that satisfies a given specification. The approach has been implem...

We examine multinationals’ optimal entry modes into foreign markets as a function of market size, FDI fixed costs, tariffs and transport costs. Our results highlight why large countries are more likely to attract acquisition investment, while intermediate sized countries may be served predominantly through trade, even in the presence of high tariffs. Small countries are most likely to experienc...

Recent literature on multinational firms has stressed the importance of low productivity as a barrier to the cross-border expansion of firms. However, firms typically also need external finance to finance the costs of market entry. In addition to productivity-related real barriers, financial constraints may thus restrict market entry. Building on a model of multinational firms facing real and f...

This study examines the factors affecting the propensity of firms to engage in cross border activities in a world of increasing returns. A model connecting outward FDI from the US with a set of firm-specific advantages is estimated on samples of industries dominated by increasing and diminishing return processes. Wymbs and Luisa Corrado on earlier drafts are gratefully acknowledged.
