BACKGROUND It is generally accepted that the development of cancer in the oral mucosa is preceded by an identifiable non-invasive precursor lesion. The aim of this follow-up study was to estimate the rate and the time to transformation in a group of patients from southern Taiwan with potentially malignant oral epithelial lesions. METHODS The follow-up time is defined as the duration between t...

OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to use volumetric intravascular ultrasound analysis of Palmaz-Schatz stents to assess the in-stent restenotic process. BACKGROUND By reducing lesion elastic recoil and chronic arterial remodeling, stents improve the long-term results of coronary angioplasty. However, stents are prone to the development of neointimal hyperplasia. Angiographic studies of...

Focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) of the liver is a benign disorder that usually occurs in women during their reproductive years. Multiple FNH is very rare. A case of multiple FNH of the liver occurring in a 34-year-old woman is described. FNH diagnosis was confirmed by means of US, CT, MR, scintigraphy and hepatic biopsy. There was no further change in either size or appearance of liver masses i...

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE We encountered a woman with a preexisting large focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) of the liver, persisting during two separate pregnancies. FNH size was not affected by either pregnancy. Her elevated serum γ-glutamyltransferase and alkaline phosphatase levels before pregnancy were reduced during both pregnancies, but returned to prepregnancy levels after delivery.

BACKGROUND Hnf4alpha, an epithelial specific transcriptional regulator, is decreased in inflammatory bowel disease and protects against chemically-induced colitis in mice. However, the precise role of this factor in maintaining normal inflammatory homeostasis of the intestine remains unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the sole role of epithelial Hnf4alpha in the maintenance of gut i...

INTRODUCTION: It has been suggested that the elastic network plays an important role in the tissue response to mechanical stress. The components of the elastic network have been poorly studied in liver diseases. Therefore, in this work, the expression and distribution of fibrillin-1 and elastin were studied in hepatic focal nodular hyperplasia and compared with surrounding liver and hepatocellu...

The PTEN tumor suppressor gene is frequently inactivated in human tumors, including prostate cancer. Based on the Cre/loxP system, we generated a novel mouse prostate cancer model by targeted inactivation of the Pten gene. In this model, Cre recombinase was expressed under the control of the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) promoter. Conditional biallelic and monoallelic Pten knock-out mice were...
