A gray-level image texture descriptors based on fractal dimension estimation is proposed in this work. The proposed method estimates the fractal dimension using probability (Voss) method. The descriptors are computed applying a multiscale transform to the fractal dimension curves of the texture image. The proposed texture descriptor method is evaluated in a classification task of well known ben...

In this letter we present an idea which reconciles a homogeneous and isotropic Friedmann universe with a fractal distribution of galaxies. We use two observational facts: The flat rotation curves of galaxies and the (still debated) fractal distribution of galaxies with fractal dimension D = 2. Our idea can also be interpreted as a redefinition of the notion of bias.

We propose the use of the fractal dimension of a scientist’s citation curve as a performance indicator that can capture its geometric shape, and lead to a measure representative of the whole curve.

In the last decade, the fractal dimension has become a popular parameter to characterize image textures. Also in radiographs, various procedures have been used to estimate the fractal dimension. However, certain characteristics of the radiographic process, e.g., noise and blurring, interfere with the straightforward application of these estimation methods. In this study, the influence of quantu...

The colonic tissue is a complicated dynamic system and the colonic activities it generates are composed of irregular segmental waves, which are referred to as erratic fluctuations or spikes. They are also highly irregular with subunit fractal structure. The traditional time-frequency domain statistics like the averaged amplitude, the motility index and the power spectrum, etc. are insufficient ...

We analyze complexity of sleep-EEG-signals using methods based on Higuchi’s fractal dimension and of the signal and a new symbolic method applied to signal’s derivative. We demonstrate that these methods may be helpful in diagnosis of sleep disorders the fractal dimension method differentiate between sleep stages while the symbolic method may differentiate between healthy subject and insomniacs...

Sleep onset is typically monitored using EEG, EMG and EOG. Scoring rules of Rechtschaffen and Kales (RK) are normally used in 30 s epochs for scoring wakefulness (S0) and sleep stages (S1, S2, S3, S4 and REM). One daytime sleepiness test is Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT) where the subject is instructed to stay awake under soporific circumstances. We analyzed 17 of 40 minute MWT recording...

A nucleotide sequence can be expressed as a numerical sequence when each nucleotide is assigned its proton number. A resulting gene numerical sequence can be investigated for its fractal dimension in terms of evolution and chemical properties for comparative studies. We have investigated such nucleotide fluctuation in the 16S rRNA gene of archaea thermophiles. The studied archaea thermophiles w...

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to investigate whether using a fractal dimension as an objective index (quantitative measure) to assess and control the "visual" or "texture" similarity of reference-image regions selected by a content-based image retrieval (CBIR) scheme would (or would not) affect the performance of the scheme in classification between image regions depicting ...

Kolmogorov introduced a concept of ε-entropy to analyze information in classical continuous system. The fractal dimension of geometrical sets was introduced by Mandelbrot as a new criterion to analyze the complexity of these sets. The ε-entropy and the fractal dimension of a state in general quantum system were introduced by one of the present authors in order to characterize chaotic properties...
