Patients with predialysis chronic kidney disease (CKD) have increased risk for fracture, but the structural mechanisms underlying this increased skeletal fragility are unknown. We measured areal bone mineral density (aBMD) by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry at the spine, hip, and radius, and we measured volumetric BMD (vBMD), geometry, and microarchitecture by high-resolution peripheral quanti...

In a series of 126 consecutive pilon fractures, we have described anatomically explicable fragments. Fracture lines describing these fragments have revealed ten types of pilon fracture which belong to two families, sagittal and coronal. The type of fracture is dictated by the energy of injury, the direction of the force of injury and the age of the patient.

In this research, microstructure and mechanical properties of AISI316 to AISI430 dissimilar joint were investigated. For this purpose, GTAW process using ER316L and ER2209 filler metals with diameter of 2.4 mm was used. The microstructure and fracture surface of the welded samples were characterized by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Also the mechanical properties of the we...

Materials fail by the nucleation and propagation of a crack, the critical condition of which is quantitatively described by fracture mechanics that uses an intensity of singular stress field characteristically formed near the crack-tip. However, the continuum assumption basing fracture mechanics obscures the prediction of failure of materials at the nanoscale due to discreteness of atoms. Here,...

BACKGROUND Bone density measurement with dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry is widely used for fracture risk assessment. Discordance between measurement sites is common, but it is unclear how this affects fracture prediction. METHODS We performed a historical cohort study among 16 505 women 50 years or older at the time of baseline dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry of the spine and hip (mean +/-...

Abstract. The purpose of the Wedge Splitting Test (WST) is to generate stable mode I fracture crack along a pre-established path, and be able to measure the specific fracture energy parameter of the material GF. The test is performed on standard cylindrical notched specimens. In order to make decision on the optimal notch geometry for a specific rock test, a number of WST experiments were simul...

The classical truss model (or strut-and-tie model) for shear failure of reinforced concrete beams is modified to describe fracture phenomena during failure. The failure is assumed to be caused by propagation of a compression fracture across the concrete strut during the portion of the loading history in which the maximum load is reached. The compression fracture may consist of a band of splitti...

Consisting of stretchable and flexible cell walls or ligaments, soft elastic foams exhibit extremely high fracture toughness. Using the analogy between the cellular structure and the network structure of rubbery polymers, this paper proposes a scaling law for the fracture energy of soft elastic foam. To verify the scaling law, a phase-field model for the fracture processes in soft elastic struc...

BACKGROUND Ipsilateral femoral shaft and neck fractures are rare injuries, affecting mostly young patients who sustained high-energy traumas. In 19-50% of cases, the femoral fracture is misdiagnosed or overlooked at the initial presentation, with reportedly increased risk of complications such as non-union and avascular necrosis. We present a case of an ipsilateral femoral neck and shaft fractu...

BACKGROUND The effects of dietary protein on bone health are controversial. OBJECTIVE We examined the relation between protein intake with fracture and bone mineral density (BMD) within the Women's Health Initiative (WHI). DESIGN This prospective analysis included 144,580 women aged 50-79 y at baseline in the WHI clinical trials (CTs) and observational study (OS) that recruited participants...
