A new characterization of the positive self-adjoint extensions of symmetric operators, T0, is presented, which is based on the Friedrichs extension of T0, a direct sum decomposition of domain of the adjoint T ∗ 0 and the boundary mapping of T ∗ 0 . In applying this result to ordinary differential equations, we characterize all positive self-adjoint extensions of symmetric regular differential o...

We develop a framework for deriving governing partial differential equations for variational problems on spaces of conformal mappings. The main motivation is to obtain differential equations for the conformal motion of free boundary continua, of interest in image and shape registration. A fundamental tool in the paper, the Hodge–Morrey–Friedrichs decompositions of differential forms on manifold...

We discuss a model of a leaky quantum wire and a family of quantum dots described by Laplacian in L(R) with an attractive singular perturbation supported by a line and a finite number of points. The discrete spectrum is shown to be nonempty, and furthermore, the resonance problem can be explicitly solved in this setting; by Birman-Schwinger method it is reformulated into a Friedrichs-type model.

We study the adjointness problem for the closed extensions of a general b-elliptic operator A ∈ x Diffmb (M ;E), ν > 0, initially defined as an unbounded operator A : C∞ c (M ;E) ⊂ x L b (M ;E) → xL b (M ;E), μ ∈ R. The case where A is a symmetric semibounded operator is of particular interest, and we give a complete description of the domain of the Friedrichs extension of such an operator.

The first representation theorem establishes a correspondence between positive, self-adjoint operators and closed, positive forms on Hilbert spaces. The aim of this paper is to show that some of the results remain true if the underlying space is a reflexive Banach space. In particular, the construction of the Friedrichs extension and the form sum of positive operators can be carried over to thi...

Using a decomposition of the global error into a locally created part and a propagating component, we derive residual-based two-sided local a posteriori error bounds for the locally created component of the global error for Petrov-Galerkin approximations of symmetric positive systems in the sense of Friedrichs. The performance of the a local error indicators is illustrated by a series of numeri...

Every compact symmetric bilinear form B on a complex Hilbert space produces, via an antilinear representing operator, a real spectrum consisting of a sequence decreasing to zero. We show that the most natural analog of Courant’s minimax principle for B detects only the evenly indexed eigenvalues in this spectrum. We explain this phenomenon, analyze the extremal objects, and apply this general f...

Resonance and decay phenomena are ubiquitous in the quantum world. To understand them in their complexity it is useful to study solvable models in a wide sense, that is, systems which can be treated by analytical means. The present review offers a survey of such models starting the classical Friedrichs result and carrying further to recent developments in the theory of quantum graphs. Our atten...

In this paper, we use the time super-operator formalism in the 2-level Friedrichs model [1] to obtain a phenomenological model of mesons decay. Our approach provides a fairly good estimation of the CP symmetry violation parameter in the case of K, B and D mesons. We also propose a crucial test aimed at discriminating between the standard approach and the time super-operator approach developed t...
