The SIRTF Wide-area InfraRed Extragalactic survey (SWIRE), the largest SIRTF Legacy program, is a wide-area, imaging survey to trace the evolution of dusty, starforming galaxies, evolved stellar populations, and AGN as a function of environment, from redshifts z∼3 to the current epoch. SWIRE will survey 7 high-latitude fields, totaling 60 65 sq. deg. in all 7 SIRTF bands: IRAC 3.6, 4.5, 5.6, 8μ...

R-band surface photometry is presented for 171 late-type dwarf and irregular galaxies. For a subsample of 46 galaxies B-band photometry is presented as well. We present surface brightness profiles as well as isophotal and photometric parameters including magnitudes, diameters and central surface brightnesses. Absolute photometry is accurate to 0.1 mag or better for 77% of the sample. For over 8...

We present kinematic measurements of thin and thick disk components in a sample of nine edge-on galaxies. We extract stellar and ionized gas rotation curves at and above the galaxies’ midplanes using the Ca ii triplet absorption features and Hα emission lines measured with the GMOS spectrographs on Gemini North and South. For the higher mass galaxies in the sample, we fail to detect differences...

We use numerical simulations of large scale structure formation to explore the cosmological properties of Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) host galaxies. Among the different sub-populations found in the simulations, we identify the host galaxies as the most efficient star-forming objects, i.e. galaxies with high specific star formation rates. We find that the host candidates are low-mass, young galaxies w...

Elliptical galaxies were once thought to be similar in their structure and dynamics to rotationally flattened bodies like stars. The discovery that elliptical galaxies rotate much more slowly than a fluid body with the same shape has led to a qualitative change in our understanding of the dynamics of these systems. It is now believed that elliptical galaxies are fully triaxial in shape. Self-co...

The self-binding energy and stability of a galaxy in MOND-based gravity are curiously decreasing functions of its center of mass acceleration (of the order of 10 10m/s) towards neighbouring mass concentrations. A tentative indication of this breaking of the Strong Equivalence Principle in field galaxies is the RAVE-observed escape speed in the Milky Way. Another consequence is that satellites o...

We investigate X-ray isophote twists created by triaxiality differences between the luminous stellar distributions and the dark halos in elliptical galaxies. For a typically oblate luminous galaxy embedded in a more prolate halo formed by dissipationless collapse, the triaxiality difference of ∆T ≃ 0.7 leads to typical isophote twists of 〈∆ψX〉 ≃ 16 ± 19 at 3 stellar effective radii. In a model ...

We have used a large format CCD camera to survey the nearby Fornax cluster and its immediate environment for low luminosity low surface brightness galaxies. Recent observations indicate that these are the most dark matter dominated galaxies known and so they are likely to be a good tracer of the dark matter in clusters. We have identified large numbers of these galaxies consistent with a steep ...

We present the rotation curves of 967 southern spiral galaxies, obtained by deprojecting and folding the raw Hα data originally published by Mathewson, Ford & Buchhorn (1992). For 900 objects, we also present, in figures and tables, the rotation curves smoothed on scales corresponding to 5% 20% of the optical size: of these, 80 meet objective excellence criteria and are suitable for individual ...

We analyse the spatial distribution of halo merger sites using four numerical simulations with high time resolution of structure growth in a Λ-CDM cosmology. We find no evidence for any large-scale relative bias between mergers and randomly selected haloes of the same mass at high redshift. Given a sample of galaxies that form a Poisson sampling of halo mergers, then the amplitude of the measur...
