In this study, the intestinal bacteria of wild Antarctic fish (family Nototheniidae) were examined using traditional culture-based techniques. Bacterial flora of the gut contents of four marine fish species (Notothenia coriiceps, Trematomus bernacchii, Trematomus hansoni, and Trematomus newnesi) was investigated to describe the allochthonous bacteria inhabiting these Nototheniidae fish. A set o...

Phenotypic identification of gram-negative bacteria from Cystic Fibrosis (CF) patients carries a high risk of misidentification. Therefore, we compared the results of biochemical identification by API 20NE with 16S rRNA gene sequencing in 88 gram-negative, oxidase-positive rods, other than morphologically and biochemically typical P. aeruginosa, from respiratory secretions of CF patients. The A...

Sphingomonas mucosissima and Sphingomonas dokdonensis are Gram-negative chemoheterotrophic strictly aerobic rods or cocci. The genomes (3.453 Mb and 3.587 Mb, respectively) contain 3,279 and 3,329 predicted protein-encoding genes, respectively. The genome of S. dokdonensis harbors a 90-kb plasmid.

Halogen derivatives of selected 3-benzofurancarboxylic acids were prepared using 6-acetyl-5-hydroxy-2-methyl-3-benzofuranocarboxylic acid as starting material. (1)H-NMR spectra were obtained for all of the synthesized structures, and for compound VI, an X-ray crystal structure was also obtained. All derivatives were tested for antimicrobial activity against a selection of Gram-positive cocci, G...

Cultures of blood from a hemodialysis line repeatedly yielded a gram-positive rod. The organism was identified as Tsukamurella tyrosinosolvens by 16S ribosomal DNA sequencing, and the patient was treated successfully by removal of the line.

Connecticut established telephone-based gram-positive rod (GPR) reporting primarily to detect inhalational anthrax cases more quickly. From March to December 2003, annualized incidence of blood isolates was 21.3/100,000 persons; reports included 293 Corynebacterium spp., 193 Bacillus spp., 73 Clostridium spp., 26 Lactobacillus spp., and 49 other genera. Around-the-clock GPR reporting has descri...

Emergence of extended spectrum β lactamases (ESBLs) producing strains of gram negative bacteria, as one of the leading cause of septicemia often complicates the clinical and therapeutic outcome. The present study was undertaken to investigate the prevalence of ESBLs in bacteria isolated from neonatal septicemia cases along with their antimicrobial sensitivity pattern. Blood samples were collect...

The Autobac 1 system was compared to the disk diffusion and agar dilution methods. Overall, there was good correlation; however, certain antibiotic/bacterial combinations gave unreliable results. In particular, unreliable results were obtained against staphylococci with penicillins, aerobic gram-negative rods with cephalothin, and enterococci with cephalothin and clindamycin.

Burkholderia pseudomallei is rarely isolated from cystic fibrosis patients outside known areas of endemicity. We report the recovery of B. pseudomallei from the sputum of a cystic fibrosis patient who lives in Brazil. We highlight the importance of careful attention to unusual nonfermentative gram-negative rods in cystic fibrosis patients.

Bank milk collected by manual expression was less likely to be contaminated than milk collected by other methods. Contamination with coliforms and gentamicin-resistant Gram-negative rods was related to the pumps used by donors in their homes. Stringent precautions reduced but did not eliminate contamination.
