We prove two conjectures of Brändén on the real-rootedness of the polynomials Qn(x) and Rn(x) which are related to the Boros-Moll polynomials Pn(x). In fact, we show that both Qn(x) and Rn(x) form Sturm sequences. The first conjecture implies the 2-log-concavity of Pn(x), and the second conjecture implies the 3-log-concavity of Pn(x). The effects of teicoplanin (8 micrograms/ml), ampicillin (64 micrograms/ml), imipenem (32 micrograms/ml), and gentamicin (4 micrograms/ml), alone and in combination, against 13 unique blood isolates of vancomycin-resistance (MIC for 90% of isolates tested [MIC90], 512 micrograms/ml), teicoplanin-susceptible (MIC90, 2.0 micrograms/ml), ampicillin-resistant (MIC90, 128 micrograms/ml), and non-bet...

Recently we introduced the concept of Suspension Trapping (STrap) for bottom-up proteomics sample processing that is based upon SDS-mediated protein extraction, swift detergent removal and rapid reactor-type protein digestion in a quartz depth filter trap. As the depth filter surface is made of silica, it is readily modifiable with various functional groups using the silane coupling chemistries...

The perception of the health sector from an economic policy point of view is changing. In the past, health expenditure was mostly seen as a "cost" item, probably because many medical treatments are covered by public health insurance. However, policymakers are increasingly realizing that a growing health sector may be quite beneficial for an economy. It creates employment opportunities and it is...

BACKGROUND With improved medical outcome in preterm infants, the psychosocial situation of their families is receiving increasing attention. For parents, the birth of a preterm infant is generally regarded as a stressful experience, and therefore many interventions are based on reducing parental stress. Nevertheless, it remains unclear whether parents of children born preterm experience more st...

DNA methylation (DNAm) plays a determining role in neural cell fate and provides a molecular link between early-life stress and neuropsychiatric disease. Preterm birth is a profound environmental stressor that is closely associated with alterations in connectivity of neural systems and long-term neuropsychiatric impairment. The aims of this study were to examine the relationship between preterm...
