The prevalence of anti-E2 antibody in persons chronically infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) is high irrespective of viral genotype, and this cross-reactive antibody is thought to react with a conformational epitope. To investigate the characteristics of this anti-E2 antibody, the immunoreactivity of sera from HCV-1b-infected patients was measured against various modified forms of E2 glycopr...
The hepatitis C virus (HCV) antibody assay remains the first-line screening test to identify HCV infection. The newly arrived HISCL Anti-HCV assay had a satisfactory seroconversion sensitivity. Its sensitivity and specificity were 98.97 and 100% for clinical samples. In general, the HISCL Anti-HCV assay may be a novel choice for clinical HCV screening.
An enzyme immuno assay for hepatitis C core antigen was recently developed and its performance was compared with that of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) RNA in the screening of HCV infection in patients on hemodialysis. One hundred and eleven chronic renal failure patients undergoing haemodialysis between May 2003 and October 2004 were included in the study. All the patients were tested for anti HC...
BACKGROUND Egypt has by far the largest hepatitis C virus (HCV) prevalence in the world with 14.7% of the population being antibody positive for HCV. The aim of this study was to examine the association between knowledge of HCV and HCV antibody positivity among the Egyptian population. METHODS We characterized different measures of HCV knowledge and examined their associations with HCV preval...
The prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in sub-Saharan Africa remains unclear. We tested 1000 individuals from Rakai, Uganda, with the Ortho version 3.0 HCV enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. All serologically positive samples were tested for HCV RNA. Seventy-six of the 1000 (7.6%) participants were HCV antibody positive; none were confirmed by detection of HCV RNA.
The aim of this study was to determine if knowledge of both the serum HCV RNA and serum anti core IgM antibody status enabled one to predict the histological severity in chronic hepatitis C. We studied 45 female patients with chronic hepatitis C infection. The presence or absence of IgM antibodies to HCV and HCV RNA by PCR in each patient's serum was determined. Liver biopsies performed were sc...
Identification of anti-hepatitis C virus (anti-HCV) human antibody clones with broad neutralizing activity is important for a better understanding of the interplay between the virus and host and for the design of an effective passive immunotherapy and an effective vaccine. We report the identification of a human monoclonal Fab (e137) able to bind the HCV E2 glycoprotein of all HCV genotypes but...
BACKGROUND Co-infection with hepatitis C virus (HCV) and/or human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in patients with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection can alter the course of the disease. OBJECTIVES In this study, we investigated the frequency of HIV and/or HCV co-infection in chronic HBV patients and related risk factors in acquiring the HCV and or HIV co-infectionit. PATIENTS AND METHO...
BACKGROUND Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected, hepatitis C virus (HCV)-uninfected patients are at risk for incident HCV infection, but little is known about screening practices for incident HCV among HIV-infected individuals in HIV primary care clinics. METHODS We used data from the Center for AIDS Research Network of Integrated Clinical Systems (CNICS) to investigate historical tren...
