Dielectronic recombination (DR) of few-electron ions has evolved into a sensitive spectroscopic tool for highly charged ions. This is due to technological advances in electron-beam preparation and ion-beam cooling techniques at heavy-ion storage rings. Recent experiments prove unambiguously that DR collision spectroscopy has become sensitive to 2nd order QED and to nuclear effects. This review ...
We calculate the production of high-energy photons from Compton scattering and annihilation of a quark jet passing through a quark gluon plasma produced in a relativistic heavy ion collision. The contributions are large and reflect the momentum distribution of the jets and the initial conditions of the plasma.
We study the e ects of channel coupling in the excitation dynamics of giant resonances in relativistic heavy ions collisions. For this purpose, we use a semiclassical approximation to the Coupled-Channels problem and separate the Coulomb and the nuclear parts of the coupling into their main multipole components. In order to assess the importance of multi-step processes, we neglect the resonance...
We report the first observations of the first harmonic (directed flow, v(1)) and the fourth harmonic (v(4)), in the azimuthal distribution of particles with respect to the reaction plane in Au+Au collisions at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Both measurements were done taking advantage of the large elliptic flow (v(2)) generated at RHIC. From the correlation of v(2) with v(1) it...
Bose-Einstein correlations in relativistic heavy ion collisions and their dependence on the freeze-out condition in hydrodynamic models is examined. The Cooper & Frye space-like freeze-out mechanism is compared to time-like freeze-out, where particles are emitted away only from the surface, i.e. spacevs. time-like freeze-out. The corresponding HBT radii are calculated for the two models emphasi...
The early stages in the evolution of the gluons produced in the central region of a head-on high-energy heavy ion collision are studied. An equation is given for the rate of change of transverse momentum into longitudinal momentum where the longitudinal direction is along the collision axis. We are able to follow the system up to the time where equilibration seems to be setting in, but we are u...
A novel idea for biochemical microanalysis of heavy metal ions in combination with flow-injection techniques is proposed. The microdetermination of the cofactors based on an apoenzyme reactivation method is reviewed exemplifying the assays for heavy metal ions with use of several kinds of immobilized metalloenzymes as the recognition elements for each metal ion.
We discuss the prospects for parity non-conservation experiments with highly charged heavy ions. Energy levels and parity mixing for heavy ions with two to five electrons are calculated. We investigate two-photontransitions and the possibility to observe interference effects between weakmatrix elements and Stark matrix elements for periodic electric field configurations.
Constraints on the EoS for symmetric matter (equal neutron and proton numbers) at suprasaturation densities have been extracted from energetic collisions of heavy ions. Collisions of neutron-deficient and neutron-rich heavy ions now provide initial constraints on the EoS of neutronrich matter at sub-saturation densities. Comparisons are made to other available constraints.
Since the discovery of large (factor of greater than 1000) enhancements of singly ionized helium in corotating interaction regions (CIRs), it has become clear that low charge state ions from interstellar neutrals or other heliospheric sources can be preferentially injected into the energetic particle population. The large enhancements in suprathermal and energetic He` suggest that low charge st...
