BACKGROUND Although indomethacin is effective in preventing heterotopic ossification (HO) after primary total hip arthroplasty, side effects are frequently observed. In the last decade a new class of drugs--the COX-2 selective nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs--has been developed. To investigate the effect of these COX-2 selective NSAIDs on heterotopic ossification (HO) after primary total h...

Contact Educational Objective: At the conclusion of this presentation, the participants should be able to discuss the work-up, diagnosis and management for heterotopic ossification of the larynx and identify the airway risks associated with this diagnosis. Objective: Benign bony lesions involving the larynx are rare. The objective is to review the differential diagnosis and management of laryng...

Eighteen hip fusions were converted to total hip replacements. A constrained acetabular liner was used in three hips. Mean follow up was five years (two to 15). Two (11%) hips failed, requiring revision surgery and two patients (11%) had injury to the peroneal nerve. Heterotopic ossification developed in seven (39%) hips, in one case resulting in joint ankylosis. No hips dislocated. ...

Heterotopic ossification is defined as the formation of mature, lamellar bone within soft tissues other than the periosteum. We present a case of a 9-year-old girl with formation of heterotopic bone tissue in the elbow after surgical treatment of a fracture of the lateral humeral condyle. Eight months after the first operation the girl was re-operated to resect the heterotopic bone tissue. We b...

Background: This study addresses the null hypothesis that there is no expansion of heterotopic ossification (HO) in the elbow beyond what can be seen early on.   Methods: The area of HO was measured on lateral radiographs of 38 consecutive patients that had operative treatment of HO between 2000 and 2013. Measurements from radiographs obtained between 3 to 7 weeks were compared to measurements...

A case is presented which is thought to be the first described example of heterotopic ossification occurring within the path of a bullet. Although the information was not available from prior medical records, the bullet presumably passed though bone or periosteum, thereby seeding the permanent cavity and facilitating ossification within the surrounding muscle and soft tissue.

OBJECTIVE This article compares various imaging aspects of magnetic resonance (MR) and computed tomography (CT) of heterotopic ossification (HO) in the pelvic soft tissues in paraplegic patients. Our aim is to highlight the benefits of integrating MR and CT imaging in the diagnosis of immature HO, which may be challenging with MR images alone. METHODS Paraplegic patients examined on the same ...

Progressive osseous heteroplasia is a rare inherited disease that begins with skin ossification and proceeds into the deeper connective tissues. The disease should be distinguished from other genetic disorders of heterotopic ossification including fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) and Albright hereditary osteodystrophy (AHO). We report a case of progressive osseous heteroplasia in a...
