With recent interest in seeking new biologically inspired device-fabrication methods in nanotechnology, a new biological approach was examined to fabricate Cu nanotubes by using sequenced histidine-rich peptide nanotubes as templates. The sequenced histidine-rich peptide molecules were assembled as nanotubes, and the biological recognition of the specific sequence toward Cu lead to efficient Cu...
Deficiencies of vitamin A, iron, and iodine are major public health concerns in many low- and middle-income countries, but information on their status in populations is often lacking due to high costs and logistical challenges associated with assessing micronutrient status. Accurate, user-friendly, and low-cost analytical tools are needed to allow large-scale population surveys on micronutrient...
Biophysical and biochemical instability of therapeutic proteins in the solution state may necessitate development products solid form, due to their enhanced stability. Lyophilization is a widely used method ensure dry stabilization biological products. A commonly encountered issue pH shifts that can occur undesired crystallization buffer component, resulting loss protein activities. However, it...
We report seven cases of false-positive Plasmodium falciparum histidine-rich protein 2 (PfHRP2) malaria assay results in patients with acute schistosomiasis caused by Schistosoma mekongi. PfHRP2 assays were negative in travelers infected with Schistosoma mansoni or Schistosoma haematobium (n = 13). Malaria was ruled out and rheumatoid factor was negative in all patients.
Microorganisms in nature are constantly subjected to a limited availability of resources and experience repeated starvation and nutrition. Therefore, microbial life may evolve for both growth fitness and sustainability. By contrast, experimental evolution, as a powerful approach to investigate microbial evolutionary strategies, often targets the increased growth fitness in controlled, steady-st...
Many of the proteins of vertebrate blood plasma share common ancestry. As more sequences are reported, the network of relationships continues to expand in unexpected directions. Computer analysis now reveals that a minor plasma protein of unknown function, gamma-trace protein, is related to the kininogen family. Some other possible relationships have been uncovered also, including a resemblance...
A bioaffinity sensor was developed aiming at the detection of estrogen. This biosensor system is based on the specific binding of estrogen to its receptor immobilized on a gold disk electrode. The recombinant DNA encoding human estrogen receptor ligand-binding domain was expressed in bacteria using the histidine-tag fusion system. The expression of the fusion protein was under control of a bact...
HRC (histidine-rich Ca(2+) binding protein) has been identified from skeletal and cardiac muscle and shown to bind Ca(2+) with high capacity and low affinity. While HRC resides in the lumen of the sarcoplasmic reticulum, the physiological function of HRC is largely unknown. In the present study, we have performed co-immunoprecipitation experiments and show that HRC binds directly to triadin, wh...
A new ruthenium(II) complex has been developed for detection of biomolecules. This complex is highly selective for histidine over other amino acids and has been applied to protein staining in an SDS-PAGE gel.
